Dr. Denise Woods Announces Her Intent to Retire in 2022
In a letter to MSCS employees on Friday, Assistant Superintendent Denise Woods announced her intent to retire from public education effective June 1, 2022. Dr. Woods is completing her 28th year in the Muscle Shoals City Schools, having served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and currently the district's assistant superintendent. Prior to working in Muscle Shoals, Woods taught a year at Tharptown and part of a year in Colbert County Schools.
In her statement to employees, she ended with, "You will always be faMily to me. I will continue to be an avid supporter of this school district’s academic, athletic, and artistic endeavors. Finally, the incredible words of Winnie the Pooh (with a slight adjustment because I don’t really believe in luck) seem most appropriate for a time such as this: “How blessed am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

We can't wait to see Mrs. O'Steen's vision for spending this money to make our gifted classroom more interactive and collaborative for her students.

Muscle Shoals City Schools Receives $25,000 Cybersecurity Grant
The State Department of Education notified technology officer Todd Meckes on Thursday that the district had been awarded a $25,000 to invest in protecting the school system against a cyber attack. Unfortunately, cyber attacks have become more and more of an issue in today's world, and school systems have been targets.
Mr. Meckes briefed the Board of Education in November on ways his team intends to spend the money to further protect the system's cyber network.

- Congratulations to Camille Coker, the 2021-2022 McBride Spelling Bee winner.
- Three McBride 5th grade students placed in the TimesDaily essay contest:
1st place, Isabel Johnson, won $75 and was featured in the Christmas Parade
2nd place—Dakota Bailey, won $50

- MSHS student Graham West has been selected as Colbert County’s overall winner in the DAR Good Citizenship Essay Contest.
- At a previous meeting, I mentioned Joe Don Anderson had been selected as a finalist in the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and he finished 4th in the state.
- Congratulations to Olivia Buck and Nora Pace for finishing 1st in the State Trumbauer Theater Festival for their duet; Conner Simmons finished 3rd in the state.
- Tate Pierce and Joe Don Anderson have been nominated by Muscle Shoals High School for the annual Bryant-Jordan Achievement and Scholar Athlete Awards (respectively). They will compete against other athletes in our athletic region.
- Once again, I commend the choral and drama departments on outstanding fall productions: the 10th anniversary show and, most recently, High School Musical. These student performers continue to take it to the next level of excellence.
- Thank you to Dr. Schneider and the staff at McBride for leading an effort to raise money for the family of one of our 3rd graders who is battling leukemia. The students and staff across the district raised over $4,000 for the family.
- Tomorrow is the final day before the Christmas Break. We will dismiss schools early tomorrow. We will follow a staggered dismissal schedule.
- The Muscle Shoals City Schools will be closed from Monday, December 20 until Tuesday, January 4, when employees will return. Students will return to class on Thursday, January 6.
- We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
