Dear Deerfield Families,

PLEASE keep your child home if they are ill and follow these simple rules to help stop the spread of illness.

You can help stop the spread of germs.

  • While sick, limit your child's contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • If your student is sick with flu-like symptoms, keep them home for at least 24 hours until the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (A fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  • Teach your child to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use and wash hands.
  • Teach your child the importance of handwashing! Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Teach your child to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.

Again, please do NOT send your child to school if they are sick. It is common to have larger volumes of students with respiratory illness and fever during this time of year and cases of influenza often peak in the month of February.

Congrats to Charlie Maples for winning the 2020 Douglas County Spelling Bee! Charlie will go on to compete in Wichita for the regional round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Diversity Map

To illustrate the diversity of our school, we would like to have students (who would like to participate) pin the location of their family’s historical origin on a map. Since many students may not know this information, we are asking parents/guardians (who would like their child to participate) to complete the attahced questionnaire with their child. We also sent home a hard copy of the questionnaire. The map will be located in our library.

Class Picture Order Forms

Order forms for class pictures will be going home this week. Please disregard the DUE DATE printed on the form. Order forms are due February 17th.

Information from School Counselor

Parents--

Be informed about the dangers of technology on young brains and self-esteem. Learn how to lock down access for your kids, educate yourself on popular apps and understand content in front of your young learners.

Parent Redesign Update

Redesign is in full swing at Deerfield! Staff, parents and students were surveyed and from those responses, the core team has discussed and categorized the largest needs that will create the greatest impact. From that list, staff will vote again to decide where to put our efforts for the rest of the school year. We are also developing a timeline for the next few years because we want to ensure that the positive changes continue to occur. The team will be presenting to the Lawrence Board as well as the state Board of Education in the spring.

Thank you for all the support and we look forward to sharing our developments with you.

REPEATS and REMINDERS

Building Reminders

Building Secure 8:00 am-6:00 pm

Deerfield entrances are locked at 8:00 (or very soon after). We must insist that all parents exit the building immediately when class begins at 8:00 am.

As a reminder, parents are welcome to walk students to class only if arriving before 8:00 am. Once the building is secured at 8:00, students will need to be dropped off at the office to get a tardy slip before walking to class. Parents will not be allowed to walk students to class after the 8:00 bell rings.

Those who have made arrangements with the teacher to visit or volunteer need to sign-in at the office and wear a Deerfield Visitor badge.

It's Getting Cold... School Doors Unlock at 7:35am

We must insist that your children not come to school before 7:35am. Doors are locked until this time. Students will not be allowed into the building because staff are not on duty to supervise. Thank you for your cooperation!

REMIND Text Messages - NEW LINKS

The Remind app that we previously used to blast out Deerfield Reminders changed their policy this summer to limit the number of subscribers in any one group. To work around these restrictions, we have created four Deerfield Parent groups. If you would like to receive text message reminders from Deerfield, please subscribe by following the directions below:

If your student's last name begins with A-D, Text the message @deera-d to the number 81010.

If your student's last name begins with E-K, Text the message @deere-k to the number 81010.

If your student's last name begins with L-Q, Text the message @deerl-q to the number 81010.

If your student's last name begins with R-Z, Text the message @deerr-z to the number 81010.

You will be prompted to reply with your full name. Please text back with your first and last name and your student's name in parenthesis i.e. Joni Appleman (Jacob)

If you have trouble with 81010, try texting your code above to (785) 371-2669.
