International Baccalaureate Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."
The Trans-disciplinary Work in 3rd Grade...No boundaries!
PYP Learner Profile Traits, Attitudes, Skills and Key Concepts are embedded in each subject throughout each day.
Third grade students are beginning to use each of the PYP essential elements in spoken and written communication more routinely. They are focusing on identifying and articulating the Attitudes and Key Concepts in all aspects of teaching and learning.
Third grade student are wrapping up the theme of Sharing the Planet and moving into the theme of Who We Are. They have been targeting natural resources around them that are renewable and nonrenewable within science. In Language Arts, the students discussed a story called Weslandia. It's a fantasy story where the main character creates an imaginary civilization with natural resources. Students responded to this literature using a graphic organizer to help with thoughts. Students were expected to apply the key concepts of form, function and causation to connect and change their written work.
As the third graders launch the unit Who We Are, they will research Michigan resources that led up to the statehood of Michigan. The Grade Level Expectations for the state of Michigan has third grade focus on Michigan resources available up to 1850. The skill of research will be a focal point for Social Studies and Language Arts.
In addition, the students were aware of the skills being used throughout their learning: self-management was used when they organized plans/decisions about their fantasy civilization; social skills were practiced as they listened to differing perspectives and thought processes of classmates; research skills were highlighted when they planned and organized thoughts; and finally, communication skills were practiced as they read and listened for information.
