The Provost Marshal in the Union army was responsible for maintaining and enforcing military rules. They did not tolerate misbehavior in the civil war. If you misbehaved in the military during the war you would be met with extreme force or punishment.They had to chop wood or dig latrines.They had to wear a board for humiliation .
They made them chop wood sometimes for discipline.
