Tag of Honor
It was great to see so many of our families, last Friday, at our first Tag of Honor ceremony. After our ceremony, we took time to set goals. Be certain to have them share with you, as well. How will your child continue to be successful this year? If your child was not happy with the tags received, what will he or she do to achieve the goals that have been set?
Book Fair
November 10-14
Book fair is nearly here!!!! Feel free to send your child with money any day next week to select books. We will go to the library on Wednesday to make our wish lists.
Readtheory.org
Since Compass Learning will not be able to be utilized this year, we have been using a new site, readtheory.org. Your child has their own login and password. This is an awesome website! It is adaptive and allows your child to practice reading strategies at his or her own independent level.
ELA & SS
We have begun our Industrial Revolution unit. Our unit kicked off with a bang due to an amazing touchstone experience. We were able to gain understanding through a rap song! Check your child's SS notebook. There should be thinking all over these lyrics. We broke them down and annotated the lyrics to understand what the rapper was trying to help us understand. We also had photos to support our understanding.
In reading, we will be using our understanding of informational texts to defend and refute claims about the Industrial Revolution. This will require us to use our knowledge of main idea and supporting details to make decisions and draw conclusions.
During writing, we are continuing our investigations of Time for Kids magazines. This week we have been looking into the five text structures:
- compare and contrast
- cause and effect
- problem and solution
- sequence
- description
