October is National Farm to School Month
"It Takes a Community to Feed a Community"
This month the National Farm to School campaign motto is, "It takes a community to feed a community". This sentiment is especially evident in our CCS Food Service Production efforts to support our community with easy access to healthy meals even during the pandemic!

CCS Food Service Continues Fuel-UP to Rise-UP!
Over Two Million Meals Served and Counting!
Currently, there are 44 school sites around the city that are providing breakfast and lunch packs that contain enough food for 5 days allowing families to make one trip for the week. As plans move forward to begin moving from complete virtual to a hybrid model and beyond, our food service workers continue to rise up to meet the needs of our community and make sure our children have nutritious meals every day in every situation.

USDA Grant Funding and Partner Collaboration is Supporting the Growth
Through a partnership between Columbus City Schools, Ohio State University Extension Farm to School, and Franklin County Extension, we are flipping the growing season to September-May with the project, Growing Teachers throughout the Seasons (GTS). GTS will offer a complete school-year growing cycle, immersive training, and materials package for garden coordinators at all 75 CCS elementary schools.
Teachers will learn about growing techniques and related instructional strategies and provide input and feedback throughout the creation and testing of digital modules. These modules will highlight grade-appropriate curriculum and related agricultural career opportunities, focusing on elementary standards and accommodating expansion to higher levels. The modules will guide teachers through construction, set-up, implementation, and maintenance of indoor and outdoor grow sites.
The modules will be filmed at demonstration plots at Franklin County Extension (shown here!). These will allow for hands-on immersive workshops and experimental technique demonstrations.

The Gardens at Linden McKinley STEM
Of course, as is always the case in the education arena, it took a village to bring this beautiful urban school garden to fruition. OSU medical student volunteers, as well as volunteers from Green Columbus and Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed, provided the muscle and energy to get the garden seeded and maintained. The City of Columbus, Lowe's, Miracle-Gro, and Columbus City Schools Food Services has provided funding for the many resources needed to put in a large urban garden and to provide needed amenities like water, electricity, and fencing.
The Linden community enjoyed the harvest this summer and we are looking forward to planting and harvesting with our Agriculture Career Pathway students this coming year.

CCS Celebrates 2020 National School Lunch WeeK!
Now Playing: School Lunch!
Columbus City Schools Food Services staff participated in a nationwide celebration of National School Lunch Week during the week of October 12-16th. National School Lunch Week highlights the wonderful work of the National School Lunch Program, which has been providing healthy lunches to children in schools since it was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Presently, the National School Lunch Program is responsible for passing out healthy lunches to nearly 30 million children every school day!
Columbus City Schools (CCS) has worked hard during this global COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that healthy lunches continue to be available to the students all over the city even as these unusual and difficult circumstances have kept students out of the schools. So this year, CCS fittingly celebrated National School Lunch Week (NSLW) to promote the importance of healthy lunches in a child’s life, whether at school or at home, as well as to spotlight the exemplary school food service staff who have made these lunches possible.
The 2020 NSLW theme was Now Playing: School Lunch! And in keeping with this theme, CCS Food Services staff dressed up as their favorite kid-friendly movie character or actor during meal kit pick-up on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. When families arrived at the pick-up site, they were greeted by a Hollywood “Walk of Fame” celebrating the food service staff at that site. While at the pick-up, families were encouraged to look carefully in their meal kits to discover if they had picked up one of the 206 lucky meal kits that contained a golden ticket! Golden tickets were randomly placed within the meal kits district-wide to be redeemed for a prize at the next meal kit pick-up. The prizes for the celebration were made possible through a partnership with Ohio State Extension (SNAP-Ed and 4-H) and with The Humane Society of The United States and included items such as a reusable tote bag, fruit, and vegetable decorated pencils and bookmarks, stickers, a mug, and a magazine full of healthy recipes the children will love to make.
