From The Principal Tony White.......

Every January 20, we celebrate the International Day of Acceptance - a day created to celebrate individuals with disabilities. I think there are two key elements to truly honoring this day - understanding acceptance and understanding what it means to live with a disability.

Acceptance is a true welcoming of someone into our lives. We accept people as they are - not as we want them to be. In accepting people with disabilities, it's important to put the person first. To truly accept someone with a disability is to put the person ahead of the disability. When we only see the disability, we fumble, mumble, and stumble our time together. When we remember that a person with a disability is a person, we remember that they have hobbies, interests, want to make friends, want to be friends, have hopes, dreams, goals, fears, and worries. They are not all that different at their core from someone without a disability.

However, it is also imperative that we not ignore the disability either. We need to remember that folks with disabilities are living with disabilities and not "suffering from a disability," "confined to a wheelchair," and other phrases well-meaning people have used for years. To ignore the disability disregards an important facet of their lives, so when planning activities, play dates, and time together, it's always good to bear in mind what the individual could do and have fun with (without an unproductive struggle).

Here at Norton Creek, the International Day of Acceptance kicks off our #BeKindFor25 - 25 days filled with specific focuses on kindness. I'm linking the calendar slideshow HERE if you would like to participate at home.

Have fun this weekend with your favorite people spreading kindness to everyone you see!
