Mrs. Bennett's First Grade Class

October 27, 2013

Thank you to all of the parents who came to Parent-Teacher Conferences! I enjoyed sharing your child's growth and learning with you. Thank you for all you do to help your child.

We will be beginning our unit on addition/subtraction to 12. This is the beginning part to our learning target of: I can add and subtract to 20. We will are beginning the subtraction part of our unit. Subtraction is very difficult, so please practice any pages that come home. I am teaching a lot of strategies along with mental strategies so any practice can only help your child.

I do have some websites to help your child practice adding and subtracting.

We will be writing a story (not a sentence) about a monster. We are focusing on details. For example: Where does the monster live?, What does the monster look like?, etc.

Also, feel free to visit my website and go to the writing tab. There are some fun games in green.

Sight Words

Please help your child read their sight words. They cannot sound out the words. They have 2 1/2 minutes to read all 50 words.

Reading Skills

We are working on text features. We will find them in non-fiction texts and learning about how they help us when we read non-fiction texts. Examples of text features are: bold words, photographs, table of contents, etc. Your child needs to be able to locate them, name them, and state how they help us when we are reading informational texts.

Reading / Phonics

You can really help by going over Vowel Town with them. (This is in their Goal Notebook). Point to different places on it and have your child say the sound and then do the same thing, but have them spell the sound.
