The Cyclone Watch - March 2019
Jefferson Middle School
From The Principal
JMS students will be taking MAP assessments between April 9-April 29. EOC testing will be shortly thereafter. On days of these tests, we ask that you please encourage your children to eat a good breakfast and to get lots of sleep, so students may perform at their best during this important assessment period. Additionally, we would love to finish with strong attendance to complete the year. As we all know, the more students are at school, the better their academic performance. Please help us to make sure students attend daily through the end of the year.
As we move in to the spring season, students usually begin wearing cooler clothing to accommodate the change in the weather. Please remind your child of school expectations about apparel to prevent any issues with attire. One of our goals is to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for your child. Working together, we can achieve that goal.

Cyclone Mathletes have been working hard this year!!! Saturday January 26 we participated in the MCTM Regional competition at RBHS where 3 of our 6 qualified for STATE!! Thank you to Mr. Hogan for stepping in to coach us that day, and congratulations to Nora Humfeld, David Meininger, and Jaesang Yoo. Then the very next Saturday February 2 was the Regional Math Counts competition! Only 4 Cyclones made it to that due to a conflict with Jazz Band, but David Meininger again qualified for STATE!!! Valentine’s Day was our make-up date for the AMC 10 national competition due to weather cancellations the week before, and Tuesday February 19 after a 4-day Presidents’ Day weekend was our MO Math League 8 contest!!!! FEBRUARY IS DENTAL HEALTH MONTH!
Dental care is an integral part a child’s health. To protect your child’s teeth and encourage good oral health, the American Dental Association recommends parents provide children with a balanced diet, limit snacks, brush twice daily and have regular dental checkups every 6 months. Good dental health is important for proper chewing, speaking and appearance.
If you need help with dental care or need dental supplies please contact the school nurse.
***Immunizations for all 7th grade students***
Spring Break would be a good time to get these mandatory vaccines!
Vaccination Reminder: All 7th grade students are required to have a Tdap vaccine and a meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine BEFORE they begin 8th grade. It is not too early to get this vaccine right now. The health department is available to give this vaccine between 8 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday or your physician can give this vaccine. Written proof of this vaccine must be given to the school nurse. Your student will not be permitted to begin school next fall if they have not received this vaccine. If a student is attending summer school, they must receive these two vaccines before summer school begins. We currently have 219 students in the 7th grade. Over half of these students have not provided proof of the Tdap and / or Meningitis vaccine to the school nurse. Please email, fax, scan, or mail written proof from your pediatrician or clinic to the school. The address, phone number, and online link to the health department is provided for your convenience.

CPS Illness Guidelines
Nurses Notes
Students exhibiting the following symptoms will be sent home and/or should remain at home if they exhibit any of the following:
· Temperature of 100 degrees or greater
· Vomiting with associated signs of illness
· Diarrhea
· Unusual or unexplained rash
· Ongoing symptoms of discomfort or immobility from an injury
· A concerning health condition that may require further medical evaluation
Students may return to school when:
· Fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
· Vomiting and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours
· Other conditions (rash, injury or health concern) subside or with a provider’s note
If your student comes to school when they are ill they put every student, teacher and school employee at risk of getting sick.
You know your child best. If they look sick, please do the right thing and KEEP THEM AT HOME until they are not contagious.
Please answer your phone when the school calls. It is very frightening for your student to be sick at school. The health room must be able to reach the family quickly when a student is ill or injured.
If your phone number changes PLEASE inform the school.
