Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
January 11, 2019
A Successful First Week Back...
It was a short week, but we packed a lot in! We took a few reading benchmark assessments then created new goals using this data. We also updated our first semester goals by documenting our progress and learned the second semester expectations for 3rd Graders!
We know what it takes to get ready for 4th grade and we have all committed to work hard this semester to achieve our goals.
Please look through your child's Data Binder. We added the following items:
- Information Writing book - rubric
- New Quarter 3 Reading Goal
- Reading Assessment
- DAZE Reading Assessment - 3rd Grade Benchmark (where your child should be at this point in the year) is 11
Report cards were emailed yesterday, (1/11). Feel free to email me with questions you may have. I am always happy to discuss your child's progress!
Our first day of MAP (NWEA) Reading Testing will be on Monday, January 14. We take the test for 45 minutes across two days. So, we will continue on Tuesday, January 15. The Math test will be given the following week!
Scholastic book orders were sent home last week. If you would like to purchase a few books for your child, it's easy using the Scholastic website. Book orders are due Tuesday, January 15.
Enjoy a snowy day filled with lots of football!

Report Card Information
I've said this before, but I take report cards very seriously. I have an assessment or some type of activity that I give your child to assess each standard on his/her report card. The picture below this section of text explains the grading criteria I use. Here are a few of the ways I assessed your child's academic progress in each subject area:
- Conduct: There is no specific assessment I can give for this standard. I use my anecdotal records and daily classroom observations to grade your child in this area.
- Reading: For this area and the specific standards, I use the following criteria:
Conference Notes: I meet with 4-5 students each day. I record notes about specific skills that need support or that are strong.
Classwork - Assignments: After I teach a reading lesson, students practice and complete assignments to show their learning. When I feel students have had enough practice, I begin looking at assignments for assessment purposes. The reading standards listed on the report card should be mastered by the end of the year. Assessments: We give very few assessments, but I use the few that we give to see how well your child mastered the content that was specifically taught. - Writing:
I use student Writer's Notebooks to look for specific skills that have been taught. Is there evidence that your child is using the skills that have been taught and are on the report card on a CONSISTENT basis? I also use your child's final written project that has been worked on for the current nine weeks. This time I evaluated your child's Information Writing book. These will be sent home very soon. Look for them in your child's Data Binder. - Math:
I use test data to help assess specific standards on the report card. I also use anecdotal notes that I take when working with individuals or groups of students. Each day I have students complete an EXIT SLIP at the beginning of math class. This EXIT SLIP is a 1/2 sheet of paper that has a few problems/questions that are a review of the previous day's lesson. I use these to form instructional groups or to work independently with students to make sure they get extra help to lead them toward mastery. - Social Studies/Science:
To assess this part of the report card I use test and quiz data. I take anecdotal notes after I finish teaching a lesson. I observe students have discussions with partners or groups. I record participation of students during class discussions or teaching time.
