Building Level Procedural Updates

WELCOME BACK!

HMS Faculty & Staff,

Happy first day back! We want to put this information into your hands for planning purposes. Here are a few tidbits of changes/updates to procedures that we discussed briefly prior to last school years closing.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

AUDITORIUM SEATING CHART

We will not be using the balcony for grade level assembly programs anymore. We will add chair seating to ensure that all students are seated on the first floor. As a reminder, please make sure that enough staff members are in the auditorium to assist in seating the students efficiently.

SCHOOL WIDE CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

In conjunction with team leaders we have devised SCHOOL WIDE classroom expectations. We will briefly share these with the students on their first day to begin their exposure. Our expectation is that all teachers spend more time going into depth during the first days of school.

The goal is to be consistent across the school in language and practice about what our expectations are. We will look to provide classrooms and hallways with visual displays. Team leaders will speak about this further once we land on a consistent format.

DISCIPLINE REFERRALS

  • Referral forms can be found in mail room
  • Referrals can be submitted to Tim or Pat
  • Please make sure referrals contain observable behavior, not opinion/emotion
  • Please contact parent regrading submission of referral
  • Please articulate prior interventions related to infraction
  • We understand there may be more severe infractions that mitigate immediate intervention or removal from class, but we want provide a consistent response to "minor" infractions

STUDENT CELL PHONE USE

  • Student can pick it up at the end of the day

2nd OFFENSE -

  • Administrative Detention Assigned
  • Student can pick it up at the end of the day

3rd OFFENSE -

  • Discipline referral submitted/Parent contact made

STUDENTS IN HALLWAYS DURING INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

Our ability to manage student movement/behavior during structured or unstructured time is dependent on collaboration and consistency. The larger the presence of adults, the less likely students will misbehave. The more we challenge students without passes, the less likely students will be in the hallways without one. Classroom teachers are the key to keeping kids out of the hallway!!!!!

To minimize students in the hallway the following procedures have been established:

  • No student should be in the hallway during instructional time without a pass
  • Hallway/bathroom passes should be established at the team level
  • Interventions for hallway pass infractions should be managed in the following order: 1) Classroom Teacher Intervention, 2) Team Level Intervention, 3) Discipline Referral submitted for Administrative Intervention
