Yarbrough Elementary - August 2016 Newsletter
Dear YES Parents,
We had a wonderful start to the school year today!!! Mrs. Daniel and I had the opportunity to meet with every homeroom to introduce ourselves and to let our students know that we are here to support them this year. We encouraged our students to make daily reading a part of their lives and to utilize the 7 Habits for future school success.
Thank you for helping us prepare for another successful year at Yarbrough Elementary. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Curriculum Nights.

P.T.O. News
Welcome back parents! The routine of school with its early morning alarms and structured bedtimes has arrived.
To the parents of our 3rd graders, let me, again, welcome you to our Yarbrough family. All of the returning parents will agree with me that this is a wonderful school full of caring teachers and leaders. I know that we are going to have a great year!
Be on the lookout out for the school t-shirt and PTO membership form which will be going home with all of the students next week. We are asking that it be returned to us by Friday, August 26th. The sizing of our youth shirts is running small so please make note of the instructions for ordering that will accompany the form.
We will be collecting Box Tops very soon. Thank you to those of you who have saved them throughout the summer. Please continue to do so for the next few weeks. Last year, we were able to raise over $2,000 for our school through Box Tops!
If you haven’t already done so, please search for our YES Parents FB group and ask to join. This is the best way to stay involved and aware of the many things that we will be doing this year.
If you have any questions, ideas, or want to plug in and volunteer, I would love to hear from you! You can email me at the address below anytime. I am honored to be serving as your PTO President again this year.
Sincerely,
Kathy Powell
PTO President

And the Parent Survey Says...
As for fundraising, both the school and our PTO will look for ways to limit our requests. We are often asked to support other schools, charities, and events. While we will continue to pass along that information, we hope our parents never feel obligated to participate in every outside fundraiser. We will prioritize our fundraising efforts, and our #1 fundraiser will continue to be the Royal Run as 100% of the money raised goes back to our school.
Family Book Club
It’s not too late for your family to read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate Dicamillo. Our book club will meet on Thursday, September 1st. Parents and siblings may join us from 7:00-7:30 for breakfast (donuts and juice provided) or from 11:30-12:00 for lunch (cookies and lemonade provided, bring your lunch). We look forward to talking about Edward’s journeys with everyone!

Art Action with Mr. Daniel
Welcome to Art with Mr. Daniel! My class is designed to encourage students' artistic imaginations by fostering an environment of creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills that are connected to every area of learning. I plan on showing our YES students foundational drawing, rendering, painting, and sculpting techniques that will help them to have continuous success as a developing artist. We're looking forward to a fun, exciting, and productive school year!

The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Welcome back! I hope you and your children have had a great and restful summer. I am excited to get a new school year started. You can help your children have a better year by establishing daily routines. Please set bed times so your children get their needed 8 to 10 hours of needed sleep; and some may even need more. Encourage them to prepare the night before for the next morning (pack up backpack, lay out clothes, sign all papers…). Start their day with breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Children academically perform better when they are fueled for the day with nutritious food. Routines also involve reading and completing homework. Please start good habits early. Remember you have the power to give optimism to your children everyday. Send them off to conquer the day with a hug and a positive attitude.
Please let me know if you children have a special need that you want me to be aware; you can email me at klwalsh@aburnschools.org or call me at 887-1973. Please leave a message if I do not answer as I may be with children. Together we can make it happen.
Quote of the month by Donna B. Forrest
Plan to have the most positive attitude possible, no matter what the circumstances.
· This makes your strong, courageous character real to those around you.
· This positive attitude shows your dependability.
· Kindness and good choices are seen in people with positive attitudes.
Fitness Fun with Coach Smith
We look forward to a fit, healthy, and fun year in PE. We will provide parents a link on the PE webpage that explains the PE program expectations, procedures, and much more. We will review this information with your student, too!
Leader Lessons
Habit #1 is "Be Proactive."
Key phrase: You're in Charge
What this habit looks like in action: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
We plan to implement the habits in several ways this year.
· The 7 habits will be incorporated in daily conversations, peer discussions, and lessons
· A "Manner of the Month" will be introduced and practiced by teachers and students.
· Students will be provided with the opportunity to be leaders around the school and in their classrooms.
· Our school's 7 Habits Song will be performed at every Leadership Assembly.
· Each student will set academic and behavioral goals that are measurable, achievable, and results focused.
Yarbrough staff is focused on growing leaders one habit at a time!
