2020/21 LCUSD Elementary Update
September 7, 2020
Dear Families,
Dear Parents,
Thank you for joining us at our annual Back-to-School-Night. Although you were not in our bustling classrooms with 30 other parents in that evening, we believe the BTSN was a success in a virtual classroom as many parents have expressed that they enjoyed learning more about their child’s educational program. We thank our PTA and LCFEF for their presentations and support of our students and teachers! It was a wonderful beginning of this unique and exciting new school year!
Speaking of our awesome PTAs, we would like to thank you in advance for supporting your child’s education by joining our PTAs. As the PTA’s mission states, our goal is to positively impact the lives of all children each day. Your membership symbolizes your support and advocacy towards your child’s school and its mission to educate all children. Please click the below links to sign up for your school’s PTA membership.
Often, we hear parents inquiring about teaching and helping their children to write better. According to the article "Better Teaching", one of the effective strategies is giving children time to think and talk about ideas before writing. When children spend some time thinking and talking about ideas, they can usually narrow down a vague topic that seems overwhelming. Additionally, it can help children discover an approach to present their writing. Rehearsing what they will write also helps them write in complete sentences.
Finally, on behalf of our teachers and staff, we would like to thank our parent community for the generosity and kindness they extend to us each day. Our schools are very special places for children due to so many wonderful parents. We thank our parents for your feedback, ideas, collaboration, and encouragement. It truly is the synergy that we generate and the teamwork that makes our schools some of the finest in our golden state.
Sincerely,
Emily Blaney, LCE Principal
Carrie Hetzel, PCY Principal
Cory Pak, PCR Principal
Fridays
Please remember on Fridays teachers will deliver 90 consecutive minutes of instruction from the start of the AM and PM schedules. Students will then use the remainder of the day to complete their assigned independent work. Teachers will use this time to plan, collaborate with colleagues, and prepare lessons for your students. This Friday schedule will be revisited in October, and we will communicate more at that time.
October 2 is the next Teacher Collaboration Day. On this day, students will not meet with their classroom teacher, but there will be assignments to complete.
Attendance Policy
A student must attend the live instruction each day to be considered "present" for the day. If your child is not able to attend the live instruction due to illness or other personal reasons, please call the school’s attendance hotline (LCE: 818-952-8339, PCR: 818-949-4875, PCY: 818-949-4881) to report your child’s absence.
We understand that from time to time, students may have connectivity issues that make it difficult to engage in a live interaction. On these circumstances, as long as students/parents report the connectivity issue to the classroom teacher and complete assignments due on that day/week, students’ absences will be coded accordingly, and the student will not be considered absent.
Grab and Go
LCUSD is pleased to offer FREE Grab and Go Meals beginning Tuesday, September 8th. These meals include breakfast and lunch. Meals can be picked up at the La Canada High School snack shop near the cafeteria between the hours of 10:30am – noon. Parents/Guardians are welcome to pick-up lunches for their children.
Although there is no charge, the student’s lunch number will be required. To access your child’s lunch number, please go to the Aeries website and look up your child’s account. The lunch number is the four-digit number located on the general tab at the bottom of the first column. The lunch number is the student number as opposed to the student ID.

Protecting Instructional Time - Regular School Day Schedules for Elementary Parent-Teacher Conference Week
Typically the LCUSD calendar marks the end of the first Trimester with a week of early dismissals at the elementary schools in order to accommodate for November Parent-Teacher Conferences. This year the District has decided to have Parent Conference week remain a regularly scheduled instructional week. Please be reminded, however, that parents have the opportunity to request conferences on an as-needed basis.
