Creating a class

If you have the need for a class in STAR for math or reading let the AR administrator know. Follow the procedures below for adding/deleting students. All homeroom teachers will automatically have a class created.

Adding/Deleting a student

1. Send an email to Mrs. Stanley (Heather.Stanley@mnps.org)

a. Include

i. Student’s name

ii. Student’s grade (if you are not the homeroom teacher)

2. You will receive a confirmation email with the student’s log in and password for additions.

3. You will receive a confirmation for deletion of students stating completed.

How to test

1. Student logs in

2. Click on Star Reading

3. Monitor Password: Admin

How to see student results

1. Click on Star Reading

2. Reports

3. Test Record (very last option)

4. Set Reporting Period>Predefined Date Range to the current session

5. Uncheck Page break after each student (unless printing for student record)

6. Click View Report

How to Read the Report

The image below provides the view of the student’s Star Reading test result from the above report.


GP—numeric representation of the student’s grade level

SS—scaled score across all grade levels ranging from 0 to 1400

GE—Grade equivalent; the number before the decimal correlates to the grade level, while the number after the decimal correlates to the month of school.

IRL—Instructional Reading Level; calculated score for the highest reading level at which a student is 80% proficient.

Est. ORF—estimated oral reading fluency

ZPD—range of readability levels (AR reading range)

Diagnostic for Parents

This is a snapshot view of where the student is at this point in time based upon testing data. It is a good tool for Parent-Teacher conferences, and diagnostic meetings.

1. Click on Star Reading

2. Click Reports

3. Click Diagnostic (the first option)

4. Select student(s)

a. Tap the blue “students” under the drop down box.

b. Select the student(s)

c. Click Save Selection

5. Click View Report

Diagnostic for Teacher

By student

1. Click on Star Reading

2. Click Reports

3. Click Instructional Planning--Student

4. Select student(s)

a. Tap the blue “students” under the drop down box.

b. Select the student(s)

c. Click Save Selection

5. Click View Report


Small group instruction

1. Click on Star Reading

2. Click Reports

3. Click Instructional Planning--Class

4. Select student(s)

a. Adjust “Instructional groups” number to desired number of groups

b. Tap radio for the correct group for each student

c. Click Save Selection

5. Click View Report
