## 3rd and 4th Grade Math

This week we will be working on understanding the number sentence. A number sentence can be written as 5 x 4 = 20. We will also work on understanding what the number sentences mean in terms on groups and dots. The students will be learning that 5 (4) = 20 means 5 groups of 4 dots is equivalent to 20 dots. We will be working with different grouping strategies that describe a group and combining groups to find the whole. This is a great introduction to multiplication and division.

This week we will begin the week by reviewing last weeks lessons on dividing with decimals and adding zero's to our dividend. We will then move on to introducing our lesson on multiplying and dividing fractions.

There will not be class on Wednesday due to the school author visit. We will be concluding our Clawed! unit this week. Both groups will create a literature poster that will include a vocabulary, compare and contrast, story sequence and an illustration section. This will be a great opportunity for the students to combine what they remember about the story and what we worked on together. They will be able to use their creativity!

We will continue reading I Got A D In Salami! This week we will be learning about Hanks adventures in chapters 9-11. We will be working on a prediction for what we think will happen next using supporting details from what we have learned so far about the characters. We will also be writing an advice letter for Hank! This is an awesome story and the students are having a blast getting to know Hank Zipzer.

This week we will continue with unit 4. This unit introduces the bonus letter. In English, when a one-syllable word ends in a f, l or s immediately after a short vowel, a second f, l or s is added to the end of the word. We will be working on using tapping for reading and spelling words with bonus letters. Our goal is to be charting the students’ fluency 2-3 times per week. Be sure to be working on the assigned probe each week. This week's probe is 12.

This week we have a double bonus for reading! First, we will be reading Moms on Strike! We will discuss the vocabulary and questions in class, what ever is not finished in class will be taken home and finished there. Wednesday we will read the story World Champions. We will take turns reading the story in class and then the students will be taking the story home to read with an adult.
