Raider Record

Dear BHS students and families,

As we finish this “interesting” school year, we are so proud of our BHS students and staff for their perseverance, creativity, and flexibility during these challenging times. While there are many unknowns for the fall, we hope that this summer is a time for rest and renewal for our entire community.

Summer plans for our building include the Lighthouse Mission moving to a new location by no later than July 15, followed by extensive summer cleaning and painting in some of our classrooms. Our administrative team will be available by email and will respond as quickly as possible; thank you for your patience as we also take some vacation time. Please check your email throughout the summer for district and school communications about the upcoming school year.

As you plan your summer activities, we encourage you to read! The Young Readers Foundation reminds of the benefits of reading for all of us. With students keeping their devices this summer, families have additional tools to access titles; all BSD students have a connectED library card, which provides access to WAL (Washington Anytime Library). Many English teachers shared recommended reading lists with their students in their final communications.

Our staff will continue its learning journey on EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion) by reading a variety of books this summer, sharing our learnings when we gather in August and prepare for the upcoming school year. In addition to the district’s EDI page, the Bellingham Public Library has put together lists of E-book and E-Audiobooks addressing racism, activism, and social justice which are available through Washington Anytime Library. There are a number of high-interest titles that are always available. Below are two recommended reading lists:

The “Anti-Racist Reading List” features adult, teen, and children’s titles.

A more comprehensive lists for kids and teens is “Black Lives Matter – Books for Young People”

Thank you for the privilege of working with your children, and we are so looking forward to seeing them in September! Best wishes for a healthy and restful summer.

Linda Wise Miller, BHS Principal

On Wellness Wednesdays, new activities and tips are shared to promote wellness and self-care among our staff and families.

We call these the Big 4 for Wellness because they include the four categories of mental/emotional health, physical activity, social connection and personal reflection. The current tips include using a pomodoro timer to remember to take breaks and information about the daily mile!
