MAISA/CCSS Gap Document
Whether you participated in KUD collaborations at the district level or facilitated KUD work in your PLCs, thank you for taking an active role this year in helping to provide quality curriculum for your grade level. Your work with the KUD documents and gap identification has gained the interest of Oakland and Genesee County curriculum leadership. None of this work would have been possible without your leadership and commitment.
I am happy to share that the MAISA/CCSS gap document is now active! If you get a chance, please check out the reference document which is hosting the links to all of the resources that have been shared so far. We value your feedback so let us know what you think of the layout. Remember – this will be a living document so we have much more to add to support everyone in this process. The KUD work and conversation at PLCs will continue to be a part of our focus on quality curriculum into next year.
You can access the KUD documents by going to the public folders – department of instruction – elementary curriculum – your grade level – ELA – KUD work – reference document. You will find hyperlinks in the standards area that will take you to the gap resources. (You will notice in the KUD folder that there is a gap resource folder that holds all of the active documents for the links. No need to use this folder to access the gaps since all document are linked through the reference page.)
Your help is needed! We are in need of 2-3 interested teachers per grade level (1st grade is full) that would be willing to help with the KUDs for the language and writing standards June 22nd. Any KUD rep or interested teacher, please contact Sara about your interest. There is a stipend offered for your time.
Have a great weekend!

Elementary Media Center Update
As you may have already heard, LCS will undergo a reorientation of our traditional library structure elementary-wide starting with the 2017-18 school year. We will implement new research-based processes focused on literacy. This is a major change from what we have become accustomed to, but I am confident this new process will serve the needs of our students better than ever.
This change impacts all of us, so I've outlined a few important points as we begin this process:
• The literacy center model is designed to support guided reading instruction, integrating technology, providing relevant reading materials based on levels and encouraging collaboration. Reading for proficiency is paramount with this model. It allows students to apply skill-level strategies and reflect on them. This strategy has been employed, with a great deal of success, at Schickler Elementary.
• With this model we will have greater flexibility to build our libraries with literature across a variety of genres, levels and various types of books. The goal is the literacy center will be a part of the classroom experience verse a separate library time.
• This restructuring will provide teachers more opportunities to supplement classroom reading materials with minimal check in and out procedures as compared to our current program. In order to create the most useful system to meet the needs of our students, we must work together to fine tune a process that is effective and consistent at all our elementary buildings.
