Thanks to all the families that contributed to a Spooktacular Halloween party!
News from Ms. Hess
This week in math we focused on using the inverse operation to check our division using two-digit divisors. Next week, fifth-grade mathematicians focused on learning to apply their work with division to real-world problem solving using multiplication and division.
In literacy, we compared and contrasted two character's responses to the same event in a story. We also worked on inferring themes, finding text evidence, and plotting a story using a plot map.
Writers worked with a partner to write a collaborative spook story including personification, an idiom, and suspense. We hope to finish up with revision, editing, and publishing when we start our imaginative narrative writing unit.
In science, we learned about the digestive system. Their favorite fact was that the average human releases 1 liter of methane gas a day! Next week we will build a model of the heart to see how the valves and chambers work together as well as the nervous system and the sensory areas of the brain.
Our Second Step goal is predicting other people's feelings. Predicting other's feelings can help one have empathy and compassion and help us adjust our behavior based on another's feelings. Next week, we will focus on accepting and respecting differences.
