Mr. Burdette's Students Conduct Eggsperiments

Mr. Burdette soaked eggs in vinegar to remove the shells. Students took notes on the weight and appearance of their eggs, then they soaked the eggs in different colored liquids and added new data to their notes. Who knew osmosis could be so much fun?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. day is an American federal holiday to mark his birthday. It is on the third Monday of January every year which is close to his birthday on January 15th. This year the day is January 20, 2020. Martin Luther King Jr. was a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his “I Have a Dream” speech. The speech was about civil and economic rights and a call to end racism.

There is no school Friday, January 17th & Monday, January 20th!

Auditorium Dedication Ceremonies

The Auditorium Dedication Ceremonies will be Thursday, January 23rd! The events will take place at 2:00 pm and at 6:00 pm. Students involved in the performances will receive ticket and additional information from their arts teachers.

IGP Meetings, End of the 9 Weeks, Report Cards, & Honor Roll Lunch

*IGPs- 8th Grade Parents! It is not too late to sign up for an IGP meeting with Ms. Doolittle or Mr. Chamblee. Appointments are available on Wednesday, January 15th; Tuesday, January 21st; Monday, January 27th; and Tuesday, January 28th. Please sign up using the Google form below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Doolittle.

*9 Weeks - The end of the 9 weeks is this week! Teachers will turn in their grades, and report cards will go home Thursday, January 23rd.

*Honor Roll Lunch - Honor Roll Lunch will take place Friday, January 24th!

7th & 8th Grade Field Trip

7th & 8th grade students will be going to see Kwame Alexander at the Peace Center on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. There is no cost for the trip because it is covered through an art grant. Students are welcome to bring money for lunch at the Haywood Mall food court. Lunch options are on the back of the permission slip. Students need to wear a Southwood shirt or something similar. Students do not need their IDs.

Students need to return their completed permission forms as soon as possible!

6th Grade Field Trip Payment Due

The 2nd payment for the Camp Kanuga trip in May is $100 due Tuesday, January 14th. All questions may be directed to Mrs. Heyward.

All County Strings

All of the following students will be involved in All County Orchestra Thursday, January 30th throughout the school day. All County Orchestra will be at Southwood Academy in the new auditorium. The students are responsible for all missed assignments.

8th Grade Art 1 Choice Assignment

8th grade art is working on an assignment with partners. For the assignment they pick a current 21st century painter and use their techniques to paint on two canvases that can go together but can stand alone. The students must find images of artwork from the artist and use them to create their own painting.

Flu Reminder from Nurse Rosa

Flu season is here!

If your child has the following symptoms, please keep your child at home:

  • Fever of 100 degrees fahrenheit or higher with cough and/or sore throat.

  • Body aches

  • Chills

  • Headache

  • Runny nose/congestion


  • Fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

Please remember that your child will not be allowed to return to school until they are fever free WITHOUT use of fever reducing medications for 24 hours. You may send either a handwritten note or a doctor’s excuse upon their return.

Cafeteria Breakfast Cart is Back

The breakfast cart is back! If you take a bus in the morning, look for the breakfast cart downstairs. Grab your breakfast and get the class earlier!

Middle School Content Recovery Saturday School

Saturday school is offered so that students can complete work to earn a passing grade. It will be held at C. F. Reames Education Center from 8:00 am-3:30 pm on the Saturdays listed below. It is for any student who has failed one or more courses. If your child failed one course, they only have to serve 3.5 hours. They can come from 8-11:30 or 12 pm-3:30 pm. If a student failed more than one class, they will stay the entire day. Students staying the entire day will be responsible for their own lunch. Lunch lasts from 11:30 am-12 pm. The dates for Saturday school are as follows:

3rd Quarter - March 28 & April 18

4th Quarter - May 30

Frozen Auditions

Auditions for Frozen will be Monday, January 13th and Tuesday, January 14th 5:30-7:30 pm at Project Challenge Playhouse.

Auditions are open to all Anderson 5 students grades K5-12.

Students will attend Health Class in place of PE for 6 weeks!

All students have heard about Read 3 & Review 3 in the media center, so this is a reminder to participate! Read 3 of the 20 SCJBA Nominees, and fill in 3 online reviews by Friday, February 14th. You will get an invitation to a special luncheon, and you will get to exercise your democratic right and vote for your favorite. The Read 3 & Review 3 site link is below for more information and access to the online book review form.
