FUN RUN FUN!
We kicked off the Fun Run on Tuesday with the most FUN Pep Rally ever!!!
This year our goal is to raise $27,000 – this money will be used to help cover the costs of our after school arts programming, food and books for students in need, dances, field trip scholarships, teacher appreciation, supplies for the classroom and so much more.
And don’t forget to save the Fun Run Date—9/27—on your calendar. You’re invited to come out and cheer on our students!
The Fun Run will take place at Memorial Stadium (32 Buchanan Place). Grades K-2 run from 9:15- 10:15 and grades 3-5 run from 10:15-11:15. You might want to arrive 5 minutes early to cheer on the students as they walk from the buses to the stadium- GET.THEM.FIRED.UP!!!
If you would like to volunteer for this event, we still need help distributing daily prizes to the classrooms on 9/24 and 9/25 and help at the Fun Run marking laps and handing out water. We need VOLUNTEERS! Please sign up HERE to help!
Thanks so much,
Your Claxton PTO

Monarch Butterfly 2nd Grade Arts Intensive with Specialists
Claxton second graders kicked off the new school year by learning about monarch butterfly life cycle, migration and advocacy through the arts! Each second grader selected an arts modality through which they expressed their learning in four days of specialist workshops. Students were treated to a lesson by a visiting educator from Asheville Greenworks, helped establish Claxton’s first butterfly garden (The Monarch Meadow!) on the big playground, and then worked to create an artistic expression of their learning with one of four specialist teachers. Ms. Olson’s workshop had students create in her Monarch Butterfly Collage workshop in art, Mr. Butler orchestrated his Butterfly Dancers and Musicians workshop in music, Ms. Rigsby’s drama workshop students created and performed Monarch Lifecycle Shadow Puppets, and Ms. Brown’s Zine Maker Activists researched and created zines in the makerspace. All student work was proudly on display during Open House where students also participated in a crowd-sourced monarch butterfly painting with Ms. Olson and displayed the Reading Gives Me Wings collage created in library class.
We are so proud of our second graders for their enthusiastic participation and creation! The specialist team wants to express their gratitude to the second grade teachers for their support as well as Mr. Godleski, Mr. Cassara and Tricia Johnson for all of their support and help with this project!

Join Our Own Ms. Abby & the CLAXTON BUZZ Team for Eblen's Walk, Run, or Roll!
Hello Claxton Families,
We are calling for your support of Eblen Charities’ annual WALK, RUN, and ROLL event coming up on October 12, 2019 at ABTECH Campus. Their services impact our school community in many positive ways each school year. EBLEN is a lifeline for so many families through their assistance with medical care and supplies, travel assistance, dental and prescription care, funding assistance for food, rent, heat and other emergency aid. We are asking for your help in making a team of walkers for our Oct.12 event! Monies raised by this important event go DIRECTLY to our children’s programs. Your participation is very important. The WALK date is Oct. 12th and registration is open now.
Sign up HERE by finding and joining our "CLAXTON BUZZ" Team! We want to be the champion school this year and I know we can do it. Bring your family and friends for a fun morning and enjoy a nice non-competitive Walk or Run on a 5K/10K route with music, entertainment, kids’ zone, and a lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse! We will be joined by Kiss Country and Star 104.3 with iHeartRadio and the event organizers are putting together some awesome prize baskets for the top money raisers!
Thank you for supporting our students and their families through this event.
I hope to see you there!
Ms. Abby

Calling All Vendors for the ACS Craft Fair (formerly The Claxton Crafty)
This year, our awesome handmade art and craft event, formerly known as The Claxton Crafty, will include additional schools from the ACS district. The name of the event is still TBD, but you can save the date for Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 10am-5pm at the Salvage Station on Riverside Dr.
We invite teachers, staff, students, family members, and community members to apply as vendors. Vendor booth fees go directly to support participating Asheville City Schools. Vendors pay a registration fee but then keep all of their profits made at the event.
The Salvage Station has enough indoor room for approximately 25 vendors. We are also welcomed to use their awesome outdoor space if you have a tent and would like to set up outside. Indoor vendor fees are $100 for community vendors, and $50 for ACS teachers, staff and students. Outside vendor fees are $75 for community vendors and $37 for ACS teachers, staff and students.
Contact information: Tricia Johnson tiller91@bellsouth.net or 828-231-4078
Please fill out the quick application form HERE and Tricia will be in contact with further details. Thank you for your support!
Volunteering at Claxton
1) Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a supervising chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for checks to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to get yours started. https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/
2) Also, all volunteers need to attend a brief (~30min) Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so you can go ahead and check the calendar. Please see below for the next training sessions or check this year's full calendar HERE. Trainings take place in the Boardroom at Asheville City Schools' Central Office at 85 Mountain Street unless otherwise noted. No registration is required to attend the training.
