Conferences Are Almost Here!
Parent-Teacher conferences are November 2nd and 3rd. They provide an excellent opportunity for everyone, parents and teachers, to learn more about each individual student. The key to a successful school conference, parents and teachers agree, is two-way communication. By exchanging information, parents and teachers can set the stage for a great school year. Here are some tips to help make your school conference be successful:
- Before you attend the conference, spend a few minutes talking to your child. Let him know that you need help preparing for the conference. You might:
- Ask what she would like you to talk about with the teacher.
- Ask what he thinks the teacher will say.
- Ask about the things she likes, doesn’t like, her problems, and successes.
- Let him know that after the conference, you will discuss what the teacher said.
- Prepare some questions for the teacher in advance. Here are some suggestions:
- What is being covered in this grade?
- What are your expectations for homework? Has my child missed any assignments?
- How are my child’s work habits? Does my child use time well?
- Does my child read at the level you would expect for this grade?
- Is my child able to do the math you would expect for this grade?
- Is my child in different groups for different subjects? Why?
- Does my child get along well with others?
- Does my child cooperate in class and follow directions?
- What can I do at home to help my child be more successful at school?
- As a parent, you know your child better than anyone else. Share the following information about your child with the teacher:
- Favorite subjects
- Outside interests and hobbies
- Any medical or health needs
- Things happening at home that may affect school work- moving, divorce, new sibling, changes in schedules, etc…
- At the conference, keep an open mind. Remember that both you and the teacher want to help your child succeed. Your goal is to work for cooperation between you and the teacher. Even if the teacher says something you disagree with, listen to what she has to say.
- Ask to see your child’s work. There’s no better way to see how your child is progressing.
- Ask the teacher to explain anything you don’t understand. Every profession has its own jargon which can be hard to understand.
- Sum up what you think has been said. Make sure both you and the teacher agree on any decisions you have made about your child. If necessary, ask to meet again.
- Ask for the best way to contact the teacher. E-mail? Phone?
- After the conference, follow up.
- Stay in touch with the teacher.
- If you think of a question you didn’t ask, contact the teacher.
- Talk with your child. Stress the positive things the teacher said… and talk about suggestions for improvement.
- Plan with your child how to carry out these suggestions.
I hope these tips help to make your school conference a success! Thanks for all of your support! I wish you and your families a safe Thanksgiving holiday!

INCLEMENT WINTER WEATHER
Winter weather is just around the corner. It is important that children are dressed properly to go outside for recess. When the wind chill is 10 degrees or higher, we will be going outside for recess. It is important that our children have the ability to run around and get some exercise. Weather will be checked prior to each recess to verify the wind chill.
In addition, the district website (www.sandwich430.org) will contain information regarding school closings. If a school is closed for an emergency during the day, parents will be notified by a SchoolMessenger phone call. Please be sure you have discussed a plan with your child in case of an early dismissal.

Be a Kindness Superhero! Rock the Cape!
On Tuesday, October 16th, author Amy Logan visited Haskin! Mrs. Logan shared her book, A Girl with a Cape, and talked to students and staff about making a difference in the world through simple acts of kindness. Just like the character in Mrs. Logan’s book, every one of us is a superhero when we use our words and actions to make others feel good. Mrs. Logan explained that our acts of kindness have a ripple effect, and we can change the world simply by creating a positive environment around us. We hope you and your family have taken the Rock the Cape pledge. For more information about making a difference in the world through simple acts of kindness, visit Mrs. Logan’s website GotYourCape.com. Haskin Students and Parents take the "Rock the Cape" Pledge!
P.E. has had an exciting start to the fall season. Students were able to bring their parents to P.E. at the beginning of October, which was a very successful event. Students had a chance to exercise with their parents and show their parents the other activities they do in P.E.. Students also learned how to throw and catch a frisbee and incorporated some math practice into the frisbee games by practicing their addition skills. Lastly, as part of Red Ribbon Week, students have been learning about how to take good care of their bodies, such as staying away from second-hand smoke around them. We will be learning about the human skeleton in the coming weeks by learning where the different bones in the human body are located.
Our tree study is underway! We went on a tree hunt around the school and then brought back our tree parts to investigate. We are also reading many books about trees. Our favorite so far is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
The kindergarteners at Haskin School have been learning about apples and pumpkins this fall. The students from Mrs. Schmitt’s class are standing in the class apple orchard/pumpkin patch. During this unit the students have been counting, weighing, measuring, comparing, writing, and practicing social skills. They had a lot of fun working together to create this engaging play area!
The first grade students are now Meteorologists! We began our weather unit. We have a weather journal where we will be graphing and predicting the temperature each day. We will be learning about what creates the different types of weather. We will be exploring air, wind, and clouds.
At Haskin we believe in a structure such as using Daily 5 so the children can learn and apply literacy skills. Having a good foundation in these skills such as phonics and word patterns, decoding, fluency, and comprehension, as well as writing sentences and paragraphs is important to our learning community. Building a literacy legacy is essential and fun at the same time! Go 2nd Grade Readers!!!
Studying Motion
Third graders are learning about motion and matter as part of their science curriculum. Students are learning to engineer carts to make them travel a greater distance and be able to pick up objects when combined with magnets.
The Art and Science of Birds
Haskin third graders were visited by Mrs. Andrea Barker, the school’s visiting art teacher. The students learned about John Audubon and his work with birds. Then the students learned about creating optical illusions by coloring a turkey and then coloring its feathers. When they put the two pieces of paper back to back on a stick and twirled them, the turkeys look like it is wearing its feathers.
