ACADEMIC UPDATES
Math
70/7A
We are continuing in Unit 2 on Expressions and Equations. We have just started solving one-step equations with rational numbers (integers, decimals, and fractions.) (MGSE7.EE.4) It is important that students always show each step even when the problems seem easy as this is building an important algebraic skill and foundation. Equally important is remembering the golden rule of solving equations, “What you do to one side, you do to the other.” There will be a quiz over 1-step equations on Tuesday, October 29th. We will then begin solving two-step equations.
8A Math
Our Unit 2 test is Thursday, October 24th. This test is on multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting exponents and scientific notation. After the test we will be studying irrational numbers, estimating and ordering square roots. This will not be part of Unit 2 test, but is part of Unit 2, therefore we will be having a quiz on these 2 scary topics on Halloween, Thursday, October 31st. Our next unit we will be working with equations with squares and cubes and they will finally understand the Pythagorean Theorem. So exciting. Remember, help sessions are daily and Khan Academy is one of the greatest math websites.
Social Studies
7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies are combining forces to explore the literary and social nuances of the novel Amal Unbound by Aisha Sayeed. Our work is in anticipation of Aisha Saeed’s visit to Autrey Mill on December 6th and supports both ELA and Social Studies state curriculum standards.

PLEASE ORDER BY OCTOBER 30th TO SECURE YOUR CHILD’S COPY THAT WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE SCHOOL!
Thank you for everyone who came and spoke to our students on October 18th – it was a great experience for all!
Student’s will be concluding our Religion and Culture unit by completing a project with in-depth research into some of the religions and cultures we have studied. These projects will be due on October 30th when students will have an opportunity to participate in a gallery walk and view everyone’s hard work. The projects will be completed in pairs but graded individually -they will count as a summative assessment.
Science
We began Cell Processes on Thursday, October 17. Over the next two weeks, we will learn about active and passive transport, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and fermentation.
We will be doing some fun labs to learn about diffusion and osmosis! Please let your child’s science teacher know if your child is not allowed to handle eggs.
Your child was given a study guide on Friday, October 18. He/she should be working on the study guide over the next two weeks for homework. A digital copy is also posted on Google Classroom if the original is lost.
Our Cells Test will be given on Thursday, October 31. Following the test, we will begin our Genetics/Heredity Unit.
Help sessions continue to be held on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8am. Please contact your child’s science teacher with specific questions!
Thanks! Ms. Johnson, Ms. Kane, Ms. Moore, Ms. Chereck, Ms. Villiume, and Ms. Fairlie
Reading
Reading classes continue to work with short stories to practice skills. Students have been introduced to “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and will work with it for a few weeks. On October 22, we will have a vocabulary quiz using words from “The Lottery.” On October 31, we will have a quiz on plot and symbolism using the same story.
Remember that our nightly homework is to read twenty minutes at home. Here is some compelling data:
Language Arts
We are wrapping up a fantastic book club unit in ELA. Students should be finishing their novels during the week of 10/14. Book clubs will meet for the last time to discuss the ending on their novels on Thursday 10/17. Throughout the week of 10/21, students will be working on the summative assessment for this unit. The summative assessment is an in-class writing assessment that will assess student understanding of the theme of their book (RL2) and how specifically the conflict of the book contributes to that theme (RL3).
Beginning 10/28, we will be starting our second unit – a study of nonfiction text information and features. We will also be working to develop and support a cross-curricular unit with the the social studies department throughout this unit as students study the novel “Amal Unbound.”
Sincerely,
Mrs. Patel, Mrs. Barksdale, Ms. Irvin, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Matthews
Spanish
¡Hola padres!
We are proud of your students for finishing their first unit in 7th Grade Spanish! We are about to begin our second unit - Lección 2. This unit will cover the themes of classroom and school. Students will learn conversational skills such as how to ask different types of questions as well as how to describe their classes and daily routine. This week students received a new vocabulary list to begin practicing. Please have your child study vocabulary and notes at least 20 minutes per day. Finally, we are looking forward to the exciting Mexican holiday of Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead). Ask your child for some fun facts about the holiday as we approach November 1st!
Just a quick reminder, students may check out a textbook from the media center to bring home for the year. Also, Spanish help sessions are Tuesdays and Fridays (by appointment on Fridays) at 8am. As always, study and practice resources can be found on Google Classroom and the textbook website component, VHL Central. Thank you for your support from home as your child continues their journey en español!
Muchas gracias,
Srta. Brown; Sra. Clark; Srta. Underwood
French
Bonjour parents,
In 7th grade French, we are continuing to practice numbers. We are using numbers in math equations and to exchange phone numbers. We’ll look into a bit of the culture of the euro, too. Next, we’ll wrap up the Unit 1 Lesson A with the culture part called Le Zapping where we watch a health-oriented commercial. Students will receive a Study Guidelines doc (nothing to fill in, just points to make sure they know) for the test. The test is scheduled for October 22. This is likely to move if students need more time with in-class Stations/Practice or Study Guides.
We’ll start Unit 1 Lesson B by the beginning of the 5th week of October. This is our 2nd of 4 main units. In that unit, we’ll have some people and objects (review), using the verb être (to be) with different subject pronouns, describing ourselves and our friends’ (personality and nationality). Major questions we’ll practice in this Unit are: What is your nationality, What is your origin, What are you (not) like, What is s/he (not) like? We’ll have a Written and a Spoken PBA over those topics throughout November (Friday the 8th and Tuesday the 19th- dates subject to change) and an art project at the end of November. It will be based on a French comic strip superhero called Super Dupont who has all the traits of a stereotypical Frenchman.
We’ll have a Halloween oriented lesson on the 31st!
Good advice for remembering spelling of numbers and for pronunciation of numbers would be to read the numbers vocab 3x out loud. Also, refer to Quizlet, VHLcentral.com, class notes, and Google Classroom. Help sessions are Thursdays at 8AM.
Merci!
Latin
10/21 – 10/25
- We will be learning about the Romans said “you” and “I” with verbs. We will read two stories, one involving a criminal action taking place in Pompeii and the resolution of that story in the courthouse.
- On Friday, October 25th, we will formatively assess the knowledge of language concepts and reading comprehension.
10/28-11/01
- This week, we will wrap up our unit on the forum of Pompeii, ego and tu verbs and the reading for the unit.
- On Wednesday, October 23rd, students will complete the Stage 4 Summative Assessment.
*nota bene* JCL/Latin Club will have its Underworld-themed event on October 31st at 8AM!
