How did they meet?
Larry and Sergey met on the summer of 1995. Larry was 22 and Sergey was 21 when they met. Larry was visiting Stanford as a prospective PhD in computer science, and Sergey was Larry's tour guide.Their first day together, surprisingly, was spent arguing. Sergey states "We both found each other obnoxious. But we say it a little bit jokingly. Ovbiously we spent a lot of time talking to each other, so there was something there." while Larry says "I thought Sergey was pretty obnoxious. He had really strong opinions about things, and i guess i did too."
How did google come about?
The two had originally been working on a site called "Backrub" which investigated how sites linked back to other websites. The two looked into selling their search innovations to another company. They talk with sites like Yahoo!, Infoseek, Lycos, and AltaVista. They entered negotiations with Excite as well, but in the end they stated "The offers weren't for much money so we continued their work at Stanford." Before they came up with the name Google, they debated calling the website "BackRub" or "The Whatbox.". They got the inspiration for the name "Google" from the work googol, which is the number infinity, with a hundred zeros. Larry Page deemed the word Google "Easy to type and memorable" and with that, Google.com was born in 1997.
