Greetings!

On behalf of the entire staff, WELCOME BACK to all of our students and families and a warm welcome to folks who are new to our school community! We look forward to working closely with you to ensure all students have a successful and rewarding year at Southview Public School.


Positive partnerships between home and school are key to ensuring student success, therefore, we will communicate regularly with you through Weekly Updates, Twitter, our web site and various classroom communication tools such as notes, individual classroom REMIND apps, blogs and newsletters. As well, we will be introducing an app called SchoolMessenger that will allow you to stay connected with our school as well as report a student's absence. More information will be shared in the near future.


We encourage you to contact your child's teacher or the front office staff at any time should you have questions or concerns.


Our dedicated staff have been hard at work this summer cleaning, setting up classrooms, organizing resources and preparing challenging learning opportunities. We are ready and excited for another school year to begin! A special thank you to our custodial staff, Mr. Jackson, Mr. Gennaro, Mr. Brady, and the summer crew who did a fantastic job during summer clean up. Our school sparkles! As well, a huge thank you to our office coordinators, Mrs. Cuthill and Mrs. Sproule, for keeping us all organized and helping us prepare for the September start up.


You will be receiving a lot of important information from the school over the next few weeks. Please be sure to check your child's backpack as some of the items will require immediate attention.


Again, we are thrilled to be back for another exciting year of learning and growing at Southview and we thank you for your continued support.

Southview P.S. Weekly Update

Weekly events/activities, school/LDSB news and upcoming events are published in a Weekly Update. In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, our Weekly Update will only be sent electronically and can be accessed through our Twitter feed, web site , the Parent Council Facebook page, and direct email. If you would like the Weekly Update emailed to you directly, please send your name and email address to our school email address: sview@limestone.on.ca

Please indicate "weekly update" in the subject line. Hard copies are available upon request.

Allergy Alert

Please be aware that we have staff and students who have allergies to foods as well as environmental allergies. Some of these allergies are life-threatening. With this in mind, we ask that all staff, students and visitors refrain from sending/bringing items to school that contain or have come in contact with peanuts and other nuts. As well, all staff, students and visitors are asked to refrain from using scented products.

Visitors to the School & Student Pick Up

We welcome visitors to our school! In order to ensure the safety of our students, all visitors are required to sign in at the office before travelling through the school during the instructional day.


If you wish to speak to staff members, please remember that during the school day we are focused on creating the best learning opportunities for all of our students and we do our best to keep interruptions to a minimum. We ask you to please call ahead to arrange a meeting or set a time that's best to chat on the phone.


If you are in the school at the end of the day for pick up, please wait at the blue stairs for your child. Our youngest students will be handed off to parents by staff while bus students are dismissed through the side doors.


Students leaving school before the end of the day will need to be signed out by an adult at the front office. We encourage families to avoid unnecessary early pick ups in order to minimize disruptions to teaching and learning.


Thank you for helping to protect our teaching/learning time and ensuring we can focus on safe dismissal at the end of the day!

Arrival & Dismissal Safety

Please call the school's attendance line (1-855-257-9349) if your child is going to be late or absent. Our attendance system is automated and will call you if we do not know the reason for your child's absence or late arrival. Please note that messages can be left on this line 24 hours/day for your convenience. You can also report an absence using the SchoolMessenger app (more details to follow).


The parking lots and bus zones at Southview are very busy in the mornings for drop off and at the end of the day for dismissal! To make it as safe as possible for everyone, please follow these guidelines:


  • Park only in designated spots. *No parking or stopping in the lane at the front entrance* Instead, drive directly to the main parking lot and park if you need to get out of the car OR drive to one of the two yellow drop off spaces adjacent to the sidewalk.
  • Do not drop your child off before 9:00 am as there is no supervision until that time.
  • When children arrive at the school at 9:00 or after they are to join their peers on the yard. The bell rings at 9:15 for students to begin classes.
  • Wait for your child in the front lobby of the school at the end of the day.
  • Dismissal is at 3:35 and students will be dismissed at this time. *If end of day bus or pick up plans change, please make sure to let the office know as early as possible in order to make sure there is time to notify your child and staff*
  • If your child is eligible to ride a bus we ask that you not drive them to and from school on a regular basis as this will help limit the amount of car traffic and congestion at the busiest times of the day.

Medical Forms

If your child requires special care for a medical condition or takes medication while at school, please notify the school's office so that the appropriate arrangements and paperwork can be completed or updated. Please check the expiry dates on all medications (ie. Epipens, Inhalers) to ensure they are current.

Data Verification and Freedom of Information - review, update and return ASAP *This is very important for our Safe Arrival/Attendance program and in order to ensure you receive notifications if you use the new SchoolMessenger app.*

Accident Insurance Application Package - optional, however, please note that Board Policy requires all students who participate in school sponsored extracurricular sporting activities to have accident insurance coverage either through this carrier or another carrier of choice. Proof of insurance must be provided prior to your child's participation in school sponsored events.

Student Use of Electronics

Students are permitted to bring cell phones and other electronic devices to school. As part of our BringIT initiative, students may use these items ONLY WITH PERMISSION FROM A STAFF MEMBER during instructional times and in-class breaks and must adhere to our Digital Citizenship Guidelines. Students may not use them during recess/lunch times. Students are responsible for any devices they bring to school. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

Milk & Hot Lunch Programs

Information about Milk and Hot Lunch Programs will come at a later date. Parent Council runs the Hot Lunch Program and the school looks after the Milk Program.

Volunteers

Throughout the year there will be many opportunities for parents/guardians to volunteer at the school. Parents/Guardians who wish to volunteer at the school or supervise on field trips must have a criminal record check (CPIC) on file as per LDSB policy. CPICs need to be updated every three years. During interim years, volunteers will be required to complete an Offence Declaration. Please contact the front office for more information.

Parent Council Update

If you are interested in joining Parent Council or just want to help out occasionally, please consider joining us at our first meeting on Wednesday, September 26th, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the Library. Elections will also take place that evening. You do not need to be an elected member of Parent Council in order to attend meetings.
