Warner Update
Making a difference, one person at a time
Seek first to understand, then to be understood (Sept. 28 - Oct. 4)
“The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand we listen to reply.”
One of the biggest changes I’ve made as an educator is to slow down to hurry up.
The story I sometimes tell myself is that staff want me to make quicker, firmer decisions. On any given day multiple people will share challenges with me. What I have learned over time about myself is this -
- When I'm at my worst I try to fix everything and often feel the need to do it immediately.
- When I'm at my best I often feel I'm listening and empathizing. I don't feel rushed in the moment, it truly is about understanding.
I've learned this about myself through reflection and the ability to receive genuine feedback.
As we transition to October our focus shifts to Strong Communication. The best form of communication is always two-way. I encourage you to slow down and make it a priority to understand.
