Dear Lightning Families:

Thank you for an amazing first 2 weeks back to school! It is wonderful having students back in the building and seeing families and caregivers at drop off and pick up. We are enjoying getting to know new students and their families. This is going to be a fantastic school year!

It's Back! Our Fall Open HOuse

We are excited to announce that we will be opening the doors of the school and welcoming families for an Open House and Meet & Greet!

We invite all families and caregivers to drop by the school on Wednesday September 28th anytime between 4:30pm and 5:30pm for a Meet & Greet. This is a great way for families to come into the school and meet the staff. We haven't been able to do this in a few years, so we are really thrilled that we can this year!

The Meet & Greet is a chance for students to show off their classroom and for parents to meet the staff. Should you wish to set up a parent-teacher conference to discuss your child's progress, please reach out to the classroom teacher to schedule a meeting.

School-Day is an online cashless system for use by parents, teachers and office administrative staff. Limestone is implementing School-Day to minimize the handling of cash by teachers and office staff, reduce paper, and streamline office efficiencies.

What’s in it for parents?

School-Day can be accessed from any web browser and gives parents real-time, secure access to up-to-date information, and the ability to:

  • Complete on-line payments for trips or other activities
  • Register your child for extra-curricular events
  • Approve permission forms instantly on-line
  • Minimize the risks associated with sending money to school with your child (“backpack delivery”)
  • Reduce the environmental impact of photocopying permission forms and announcements

How can I sign up for my child’s School-Day account?

Parent/Guardians must create an account, and link their child to their account. Multiple parents/guardians can be linked to the same student, and multiple students can be linked to a parent/guardian.

You will have received a letter that came home with your child. The letter contains a unique code to create an account in School-Day. Please reach out to the school if you did not receive your child's code.

  • Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather and has extra clothing in case of spills or bathroom accidents
  • Don't forget to send a water bottle with your child every day!
  • COVID school screening must still be done every day, and students who have any symptoms do need to stay home; here is a link to the most up to date information:

Medical Safety Plans

If your child has any significant health conditions such as asthma or allergies or if they require medications to be administered at school, it is imperative that we receive medical plans prior to the start of school. Recess & Rain

We have 2 recesses each day and students do go outside for both of them. Should it be lightly raining before school or during a recess break we will be outside. Students are advised to dress for the weather. A rain jacket, rain boots and/or an umbrella are helpful to enjoy the outdoors when it is wet.

If there is a chance of lightning or if it is pouring we will remain indoors for recess but we will aim to be outside as much as possible.

During the colder months we will take direction from Public Health about outdoor temperatures and whether we stay in or go out. Our goal is to enjoy the outdoors and get fresh air whenever we can!

Tryouts are now completed for students in Grades 4-6 and the tournament is coming up next week! More information will come home soon for students on the teams. We had a great turnout of students! Many thanks to Mrs. Leeder and Mrs. Whitehead for volunteering to coach the teams!

Cross Country Running

Cross Country will be up and 'running' soon! More information will be sent out next week, once soccer is finished. Thanks to Ms. Carter and Ms. Raven for volunteering their time!

Backpacks Available!

If your child needs a backpack please contact the school office. We have some new ones that we would like to give to families!

School Trips & Volunteers

Throughout the year, we may ask for parent/guardian volunteers on school trips or for various classroom and school activities. The wait time for obtaining a CPIC (background check with vulnerable sector screening) can be lengthy. As such, if you think you would be willing to assist with a trip or school event in the future, please consider obtaining a CPIC with vulnerable sector screening completed, beforehand.

Tri-Board Student Transportation

From time to time, Triboard Transportation needs to cancel buses due to staff shortages, weather, or mechanical issues. The best way to stay informed is to subscribe to Triboard's Delays and Cancellations notices. Click on the link below:

You can also follow us on Twitter to find out about bus cancellations:

If a bus is cancelled, it is cancelled in the morning as well as the afternoon. If your child's bus is cancelled, and you drive them to school, please remember that you will also have to pick them up at the end of the day.

New: School Zone Traffic Safety

Reducing vehicle speeds improves safety for all road users. Neighbourhood Area Speed Limits can help set consistent expectations for motorists across a community, encouraging careful and cautious driving through the area. Community Safety Zones also help to reinforce safe and attentive driving, especially in school areas where families may be walking or cycling to school.

In two pilot areas – Westwoods and Strathcona Park – the City is introducing neighbourhood-wide Area Speed Limit reductions to 40 km/h, school area speed limit reductions to 30 km/h, and the introduction of Community Safety Zones in the immediate area surrounding schools.

Community Safety Zones are also planned to be introduced at all schools in Kingston for fall 2023.

Click on the link below for more information from the City of Kingston:

To minimize traffic around the school and increase safety, we ask that you please walk if possible. If you do drive, please note that there is limited parking in the school parking lot. Please try to use the side streets when dropping off or picking up your children. Please do not park in front of the school as this is where our buses load. Please take note of the signs that indicate the bus loading zones. We very much appreciate your cooperation and help in keeping our students safe.

Fillable Water Bottles

Please be sure to send your child with a fillable water bottle.

Allergy Awareness

We have several students with life-threatening allergies. A reminder that our school is nut aware: please ensure that your child's snacks and lunch do not contain any nut products. Classroom teachers will communicate any additional food allergies that families will need to be aware of. Thank you for your support in keeping all of our students safe!

Daily Covid Screening:

  • Staff, students, and visitors should continue to self-screen every day before attending school using the COVID-19 school and childcare screening tool. Following public health guidance, individuals should stay home if they are feeling ill to prevent the spread of illness.

Fond Farewell to Ms. Allen

Many of you are familiar with Ms. Allen as she has been part of our team at Lord Strathcona for several years and she has taught many grade levels while she has been here. Ms. Allen has recently accepted a position teaching English As a Second Language in Limestone. We are thrilled for her, but she will definitely be greatly missed! We wish Ms. Allen all the best in her new role!

We would love to have you join our Council.

Wanted: Bingo Volunteers

Bingo is back up and running and what a simple and easy way to fundraise for your school! Did you know Bingo is a completely separate entity from the school council?!

NO monthly meetings to attend!

NO awkwardly trying to sell something to your neighbours!

NO counting cash

The only requirement is a two hour shift at the Kingston Play! Gaming and Entertainment Centre! You don't even need to have kids at the school to volunteer!

All proceeds raised through our partnership with Play! Gaming and Entertainment are used to purchase items for the school such as Chromebooks, gym equipment, outdoor equipment, class supplies, coding robots, and so much more!!!

We are in need of volunteers and training is provided. The bingo volunteers act as ambassadors for our school: welcoming people, ensuring the facility is clean, helping out when a bingo is called, and assisting patrons. Each shift is just two hours long and volunteers are partnered up. It's a great way to spend time with a friend or family member or meet other members of the school community! If you would like to learn more about being a volunteer, please reach out to the school.

School Board Policy states that participation on school sports teams (both elementary and secondary) is conditional on obtaining at least the basic student accident insurance coverage for the student or proof of external private coverage through your family plan. The cost of basic coverage is approximately $17.00 per year. This covers the student while attending school during the school day. The time spent by students participating in school-sponsored teams is considered part of the school day, even if the games and/or practices are held outside of the regular school hours. It is recommended that all parents consider this program. Visit to get this inexpensive and highly recommended insurance.

Daily Screening Still Required

Staff, students, and visitors should continue to self-screen every day before attending school using the COVID-19 school and childcare screening tool. Following public health guidance, individuals should stay home if they are feeling ill to prevent the spread of illness.
