Principal Message

Parents,

It was a great Red Ribbon Week! Proud of our tigers and their great choices. We have wonderful LEADERS making promising choices. Check out the pictures below to see the smiles we had at Bike Rodeo. Thank you to everyone for supporting and participating in the event.

As a safety concern, please help us with our Summerglen Walkers. It has been brought to our attention that due to the number of cars parking outside of the school gate in front of the Summerglen entrance, we have had a few close calls with cars hitting students and parents. We are asking that you please use the car rider line. It moves quickly! If you do choose to be walkers, please be considerate of the surroundings. Students walking across the street to load cars should have an adult with them. Thank you for helping keep our kids safe!

In November, we will be given a new opportunity. Healthy Schools is providing an opportunity for your student to get their flu shot at no cost to you. For your student to get the free flu shot, you will need to read the attached letter "NEISD Flu Shot Initiative," and complete the attached consent form. The consent form MUST be completed in full and returned to T.H.E. By Friday, November 11, 2016. Any consent form not completed in full or not turned in by the deadline, will disqualify your student from getting the flu shot.

Students can turn in the consent form to the Tuscany Clinic between now and November 11th. We encourage a parent or guardian to attend with your child. Please indicate a time that will work best for you so we can schedule your appointment. If you are unable to attend, we will administer the flu vaccine between 8:00 am and 10:30 am to your child. Please drop off all permission forms, completely filled out, to the clinic before November 11th if you wish your child to participate.

On November 28, 2016 we will call in your student for the flu shot and return him/her to class. We are scheduled to give the flu shot between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

If you have any questions, you can email our School Nurse, Mrs. Donna Hunsicker BSN, RN, CPN at dhunsi@neisd.net.

Please keep in mind, this flu shot is strictly voluntary.

Learning Labs

We host our 2nd annual round of Learning Labs on Dec. 9th. Our labs occurred for the first time last year in place of school clubs for students. These are rotations during the instructional day to support various trades, careers, sports, hobbies, etc. We like for parents and community members to sign up to share their expertise in a specific area. These are great opportunities for students to learn! See the flyer below and let your child's teacher(s) know if you can help us on this day. Last year, we had Dr. Gottardy and Congressman Will Hurd here as well as adults teaching cooking, sign language, martial arts, and so much more. We look forward to having you here on campus with us!!

Middle School Magnet Nights

The Magnet Schools always visit our campuses but they are also hosting parent nights. See the info below:

Middle School Magnet Nights are targeted at 5th grade parents to provide them with information about our middle school magnet programs. Our goal is to provide parents the opportunity to see our presentations, visit with magnet school staff members and ask the specific questions they have about each of our programs.

Some frequently asked questions:

· Can they attend more than one of the Middle School Magnet Nights? Yes, the events are open to anyone who wants to come; however, the presentations will be the same each of the five nights.

· When is the deadline to apply? The deadline to apply is January 25, 2017. The first set of notifications will go out on January 27, 2017.

· Can a student apply for more than one program? Yes. We frequently have students who apply for all three magnet schools. If selected for more than one program, the student and their parent will have to choose which program they wish to attend.

· Why is STEM not listed? They have chosen to do on campus visits to recruit this year. If parents have questions, please direct them to Dr. Alcala, Director, or Mrs. Jensen, Assistant Director at STEM.

· Where can the parents get more information? Send them to our websites listed at the bottom of the email blast or they can call either one of us.
