Math
We spent all week working on sorting and counting to 10. We started by sorting socks by color, pattern, size, etc. The students then worked in centers sorting different objects such as farm animals, fruits and vegetables, paper clips, and coins. We talked about different ways to sort plates, cups and bowls with different colors and designs on them. The students practiced classifying objects by attributes and discussing why they fit in a certain category. We sorted books by hardcover or paperback; large or small; animals or people on the cover; and sticker or no sticker. We also discussed the relationships of various objects. For example, a basketball hoop and basketball go together but a basketball hoop and a pencil are not related. Today we sorted different items that are associated with certain weather, and then counted to find out how many objects in were in each group.
Reading
This week in reading we analyzed the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We started by making predictions. The students drew their predictions of what would happen when all of the letters climbed up the tree. Then, we moved to retelling the story in our own words. We cut out pieces of the story and put them in order, introducing the concept of beginning, middle, and end. We made connections to the story by drawing a time that we got hurt like the letters in the text. We introduced problem and solution in the story by talking about what the letters could have done to save themselves from falling out of the tree. We had some creative responses. Today, we talked about our opinion of the book by drawing, writing, and discussing our favorite part of the story. The kids loved this book and were super engaged every time we read it!
Writing
In writing this week we worked on building stamina and being able to write the whole time. We brainstormed ways to think of writing topics. We focused on being able to tell a story across pages, which is hard for them at this point in time. We will continue to develop our stories and become experts at telling across pages! Although writing is an overwhelming task at this age, we used wordless books to demonstrate how authors can tell a story with only pictures. Students were excited to become authors of wordless books! We also talked about how to be a good listener and an active participant in the writing process.
