Enrichment at David Leech Elementary
First grader Nicholas Spiering and second grader Mary Huth created handmade tiles detailing metamorphosis during their enrichment class with Mrs. Hettrich. After the project was complete second grade student Mary Huth stated “This project was really fun. I liked doing all the stages of metamorphosis. I like science so doing it with art combined two of my favorite things.”
Both Mary and Nick studied the process of metamorphosis and the four stages that an insect goes through. Next, the students planned and designed their four tiles on paper, and then took their projects to the next level by creating these stages on their own clay tiles. During this process Mary and Nick discovered that clay also has stages of development, and that each stage of development is important, just like the metamorphosis of an insect. First grader Nicholas Spiering said “Making all four tiles was really hard work, but I liked how art and science blended in.” Both students did an amazing job.
FBI Hope PSA Student Recognition Day
On Wednesday, April 19, Mr. Kulick and his students participated in the FBI HOPE PSA Student Recognition Day. Originally we got involved in a video contest to bring awareness to Opioids leading to Heroin use and even death epidemic. We Won! While at the recognition day we received 3rd place in the Judges vote that had a board consisting FBI directors, doctors, victims, etc. We also won 2nd place in the people choice aware. Last we received a certificate of appreciation from the FBI.

On Thursday, April 13, 2017, thirteen juniors and three seniors were inducted into National Honor Society. New members were selected based upon the four pillars of NHS—scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Inductees included seniors Skye Azzarone, Jonathan Burtick, and Abraham Gibson, and juniors Phillip Edward Carlson, Devonte Commodore, Cameron Davies, Makenzie Fello, Trent Foster, Summer Heasley, Mikayla Minnae Lovelace, Emma Peterman, Ariana Scott, Cassidy R. Waltz, Chase Wirick, Laren Williamson, and Antonio Yurjevich.
LHS Band
The LHS band and choir traveled to Washington DC at the beginning of April. They performed chamber music for the residents of a Veterans home, attended a ballet at the Kennedy Center and toured various national monuments and museums.
Third Grade K-Cup Recycling and Community Outreach Project
The idea for this project came up during one of the weekly third grade planning meetings with Mrs. Deemer, Mrs. Horneman, and Mrs. Sorisio. As the statement was made, “I can’t believe how many K-Cups my family goes through!” this project idea fell easily into place. The students needed to collect 110 used K-Cups in order to make personalized Easter baskets for the residents of both Leechburg High Rises and hand deliver them on April 13th. Over the next 3-4 weeks, the third grade children brought in over 900 used K-Cups – 967 to be exact! This then prompted the teachers to go back to the drawing board and expand the scope of the recycling project. The decision was made to not only make baskets for the high rise residents, but also make baskets for all the DLE students, teachers, and personnel! Many of the families donated bags of wrapped candy so that the second portion of this project could be successfully completed as well. As the faint smell of coffee left the third grade classrooms, the importance of this recycling project remained with the students! Doing something so simple can make a big difference to our community and school!
WIN Group Time
A group of students from Mrs. Diani, Mrs. McCarthy, and Mrs. Vargo’s homerooms completed a project while working with Mrs. Vargo during their WIN group time. The group wrote and illustrated a book about what they want to be when they grow up, which has been sent off to be published by Student Treasures Publishing. The students were very excited about this project, and they are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our book to share with the other students of David Leech Elementary.
