Muskego Lakes Family Newsletter

Muskego Lakes Principal
Dear Muskego Lakes Families,
It is hard to believe that 20 years ago tomorrow, Americans woke up and began their daily routines- unaware at the time that September 11th, 2001 would become a turning point in American history. Terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania resulted in the loss of a devastating 2,977 lives.
In order to honor those lives lost, we began our day at Muskego Lakes this morning with the playing of "Taps," a moment of silence to honor the lives lost, and then we shared the following message with our students:
"After the 9/11 attacks, President George W. Bush addressed the nation. He said: 'Great tragedy has come to us, and we are meeting it with the best that is in our country, with courage and concern for others because this is America. This is who we are.'
When asked about 9/11, President Barack Obama said: 'Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed September 11th.'
So as our country recalls this tragedy, we encourage you to ask your loved ones about the events on 9/11 and how the world changed for them that day. Understanding their answers is key to understanding the world in which you live.
And finally, Just like the heroes who stepped up for one another following the events of 9/11, know that each one of you has the power to make a difference here at Muskego Lakes- a place we truly believe reflects the best of who we are as a country."
With love,
Rachel Rydzewski & Nancy Pasch

Dress Code at Muskego Lakes
The Muskego-Norway Schools recognizes that students' attire is primarily a parental responsibility. As this is a learning environment and should be kept free of distraction, clothing must fit so as to cover the body adequately, provide comfortable movement, and not disrupt the learning of others. In short, the clothing worn to school needs to “fit you and cover you.” If a student’s dress violates the following criteria, the student will be asked to change and the incident will be documented. Repeated violations of this policy will result in further disciplinary action. (School Board Policy po5511)
If a student has a dress code violation the following will happen:
- A staff member will privately let the student know that he/she needs to head to the office due to a dress code violation, and the adult will submit a referral in Infinite Campus.
- An administrator will then meet with the student to problem-solve together to prevent future dress code issues.
- Students will be expected to fix the dress code violation (change or cover up) prior to heading back to class.
In order to partner with us so that students do not have dress code violations, please review the following with your child:
Provocative, revealing and sexually explicit clothing will not be allowed.
No part of any undergarment is to be visible while standing or sitting
No strapless tops, off the shoulder, visible bra straps, or low-cut tops
No “muscle” undershirts.
Shorts and skirts should be mid-thigh or longer for students.
No visible boxer shorts with loose, low pants
No swimming attire, bare chests/midriffs/backs
No sleeping attire
No bare shoulders
No fashions of a sexual or discriminatory nature
No insignia, jewelry, or clothing that could identify an individual as a member of a gang or depict prejudice
No bare feet, stocking feet, or slippers
No clothing/attire representing or related to drugs or alcohol
No wearing of hats or hoods are allowed in classrooms.
Coats and jackets are to be kept in the lockers and picked up at the end of the school day before leaving.
No pocket chains, clothing decorated with chains, excessive metal or spiked accessories
The dress code applies to all school activities. Please know that we never intend to embarrass your child or make them feel uncomfortable. If you have any questions regarding the dress code language from our Handbook, please reach out!

6th Grade CogAt Testing Ahead on September 22nd
6th grade social studies teachers are planning on giving the CogAt on Wednesday, September 22nd. The CogAt is the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to both 3rd and
6th grade students every year. The CogAT evaluates the level and pattern of cognitive
development of students, as well as their abilities in problem solving using verbal, quantitative,
and spatial (nonverbal) reasoning. The CogAT measures developed abilities that begin at birth
and continue through early adulthood. Scores can be used to adapt instruction in ways that
enhance students’ success in learning.
Data gathered from these assessments will be included as one aspect of the multiple measures
that help staff make decisions regarding your child’s instructional needs. There is no way for
students to study or prepare for this assessment. Rather, to attain the most reliable results, we
want to foster a relaxed, natural environment in the classroom.
Results of this assessment will be shared with you following the completion of the testing and following our District’s universal screening process. The information gathered will not be used
in any calculation of report card grades since it is not directly connected to standard or skill
achievement.
Please contact Kristi Brooks, the Director of Secondary Learning, if you have any questions at kristi.brooks@muskegonorway.org.
