Estrada's E-Notes

August 2022 Edition

Principal's Post

I hope you have had a wonderful summer! We are excitedly preparing for an incredible 2022-2023 school year.

Whether your family has been at Newport El for years or this is your first year, we are glad you are here! Thanks for trusting us with your children and partnering with us in their education. We strive to help each child grow into "best on the beach" citizens, friends, and scholars. And, we can only do that with parent involvement and support.

Please read through this newsletter for more information about the start of school and ways to get involved. I look forward to greeting you and your students on August 22nd.

Keep being awesome!

Principal Estrada

Grow with Gratitude

After the the last 2 years, it would be easy to think about all the challenges and things that we've missed out on. Instead, we can focus on the many things to be grateful for like the amazing place we live, where we get to teach and learn, and the fact that we have the chance to learn and grow.

There are lots of benefits to fostering gratitude including regulating stress, coping with emotions, making us happier, nurturing relationships and energizing learning. Author Shawn Achor sums it up this way, "If we can find a way of becoming more positive in the present, then our brains work even more successfully. As we're able to work harder, faster, and more intelligently, dopamine, which floods your system when you're positive, has two functions. Not only does it make you happier, it turns on all of the learning centers in your brain."

I'll be sharing resources about gratitude throughout the year and highlighting what we have to be grateful for at Newport El. I invite you to embrace this school year's theme... "Grow with Gratitude."

Registration

Each August parents need to complete registration for their new or returning students in Aeries Parent Portal. You should be receiving a letter in the mail with instructions soon. If it hasn't arrived by August 5th or you are having difficulty, please call the office (949-515-6965) or email Susi for assistance ajimenezmendoza@nmusd.us. Registration must be completed by August 12th.

Class Placements

The staff puts great thought and care into class placements. We consider many factors including academic strengths/needs, complementary teaching/learning styles, and social dynamics. Our goal is to set up students for a successful year. For this reason, we do not solicit requests for specific teachers or re-assign students after class placements are made viewable on August 20th.

Due to the way students are rostered in various online programs in preparation for the start of school, you may be able to see your child rostered to a teacher. Please note that teacher assignments are not finalized until they are officially viewable on the Aeries Parent Portal on Saturday, August 20th.

TK and Kindergarten Parents

We know that this is an exciting time for you and your little one. You and your child may be feeling a little anxious too. On the first day of school we ask that you drop your child off at the kindergarten gate on 13th Street, just as you will do throughout the year. There may be some tears that first morning, but we've found that they dry up more quickly when parents separate at the gate rather than staying with students or walking them to the classroom.

We invite you to arrive at 2pm for pick up time on Monday so that you can visit your child's classroom and see what they have done on the first day of school.

Get Connected!

The efforts of our PTA and Newport Schools Foundation do so much to enhance the experience of our students. Their fundraising efforts fund community events, assemblies, guest speakers, library books, teacher grants, and so much more. One of the Foundation's main objectives is to provide the funding for additional staff. These 2 part-time teachers work in conjunction with our staff to provide small group instruction which allows us to reduce the student to teacher ratio for portions of the school day.

You can connect with the PTA and Foundation using the links below.

School Volunteers

Parent volunteers add so much to our school community and the experience of our students.

All interested volunteers are asked to complete these 3 steps:

  1. Read through the Newport El Volunteer Orientation slide deck.
  2. Complete the Newport El Volunteer Agreement.
  3. Complete the district's volunteer approval process.

As always, every teacher utilizes volunteers in different ways. Teachers will be communicating with the approved volunteers from their class about their need for volunteers and scheduling.
