Eagle Ridge Academy is currently in FULL-SCHOOL (GRADES K-12) IN-PERSON LEARNING. Fridays will remain distance learning days.

In January, the ERA Board of Directors approved the new Learning Model Decision Making Matrix for grades 6-12. Community Updates
Eagle Ridge Academy has again been named one of the best high schools in the state and the country by earning the 2021 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools Medal and Charter Medal.
The 2021 report (https://www.usnews.com/edu.../best-high-schools/minnesota...) ranked Eagle Ridge Academy as the third best high school (5th in 2019) in the state out of 416 schools and 202nd in the country out of 17,245 schools recognized. This year marks the ninth year in a row U.S. News & World Report has honored Eagle Ridge Academy.
U.S. News & World Report used a new methodology in determining their school rankings this year, which included six indicators of school success—college readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading proficiency and performance, underserved student performance, and graduation rates. 2021 awards were derived from 2018-2019 school year data.
ERA ranked #6 in College Readiness and #3 in College Curriculum Breadth. “The highest-ranked schools are those whose students excelled on state tests and performed beyond expectations (overcoming achievement gap); participated in and passed a variety of college-level exams; and graduated in high proportions,” U.S. News & World Report shared in a news release.
We are proud of our students and staff for continuing to excel and achieve our mission by demonstrating their best in academic achievement, behavior, and attitude while striving to attain their highest potential.

Notes from Eagle Ridge Academy - Jason Ulbrich, Executive Director
Dear Eagle Ridge Academy,
Finally, a sunny day! It seems like we have not seen the sun in weeks, but amazing weather and summer are right around the corner.
Today, I am writing to update you on a few items and to plead for diligence in following safety protocols as we finish the year.
Next Year
On November 10, 1942, Winston Churchill said, “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” Churchill spoke this famous quote about three years into World War II, at a time when the Allies were starting to see victories. Churchill knew that the road was still long. This quote resonates with me in regard to Covid. I truly believe that the end of the beginning for Covid has just arrived.
Earlier in the school year, I had myself convinced that schools would be back to “normal” next year. That was probably just a way to cope or to keep a glimmer of hope for normalcy. The fact is, the start of next school year may look very similar to the way we are educating today. Next year, I expect that we will continue to provide distance learning, practice social distancing, and wear masks. My sincere hope is that we won’t, but we need to be realistic. Should we need to return next year with Covid safety protocols in place, we do plan to come back in person, five days per week. Obviously, we will follow the decision matrix.
C-19 Safety Protocols
Currently, we have 64 students and two faculty members on quarantine. There are five students and one staff member that have recently tested positive. While we are still under our benchmark of a 1% positive rate, we all need to adhere to safety protocols and ensure that our students are also diligent. The vast majority of students on quarantine are there because they did not follow the safety protocols. Students are becoming complacent and staff are becoming tired.
We have just 23 days left! I want our students to experience graduation, end-of-year parties, and spring activities. Please follow the guidelines so we can end this year strong.
Gryphon Online Academy
According to a survey conducted by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), 7% of Minnesota students responded that they will remain in online school after the pandemic. In a recent survey conducted with our ERA families, 10% indicated that they are interested in staying online. This information prompted research into a potential online school (Gryphon Online Academy). The Gryphon Online Academy (GOA) would be a separate school with separate teachers. GOA would have the same curriculum as ERA but would be delivered online. GOA would not be the same as our current distance learning model.
Tuesday night, the Board approved the submission of an application to MDE in order to be approved to start GOA. ERA will put together a task force this summer in order to better understand whether or not there is a true need for GOA and, if needed, to start planning the school. The soonest that GOA would be ready to serve students is the second semester of the 2021/22 school year. Currently, we are uncertain if there is a need and are conducting additional research. If it is determined that we need GOA, it will require another vote from the Board to proceed.
Let’s finish the school year with a positive tone that will lead us into next year.
Sincerely,
Jason Ulbrich
Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Notes - Erin Johnson, Principal
The students and staff have impressed me with their work ethic this year. In a year of great trials, they have not ceased to amaze me. They are true models of our pillars, showing perseverance through and through during this time.
As we maneuver through MCAs and head toward final exams and AP exams, I want to communicate a change to the grading scale. Last semester, we changed the grading scale to reflect the difficulties of the beginning of the year, including learning new instructional models and technology. With this behind us, but still wanting to reflect the delicacies of this year, we are changing the grading scale for second semester to: 45% from 3rd quarter, 45% from 4th quarter, and 10% for final exams. If students think the traditional 40/40/20 breakdown would be better for their overall grade, they will have the option to appeal. This option will be available after final exams. Final exam schedules will be shared next month.
Sincerely,
Erin Johnson

Here Come the Gryphons - Kris Babler, Activities Director
It has been a wild spring and the morning announcements at school here have been filled with words of Gryphon victories.
Eagle Ridge Academy announced a cooperative agreement with United Christian Academy for a varsity and JV baseball program shortly before the beginning of the season. It is ERA’s return to varsity baseball after several years without the program. Our own Evan Johnson is managing and they are off to a hot 3-3 start, riding 8th grader Oliver K.’s pitching.
We also took administrative control over the track program this spring, hiring Cross Country Head Coach Rob Economy to lead the track program that includes students from the International School of Minnesota, Chesterton Academy, and Groves Academy. Junior Ayayo O. captains the team, which has seen the girls program win three out of four meets and the boys team score a win last week.
Robotics, led by Derek Lutz, heads into the Minnesota State Tournament ranked 6th in state with a great chance to win the state competition on May 22. We also can't forget that the state-champion Mock Trial team competes in the national tournament on May 10!
We were excited to for JV golf to begin this spring and for the launch of Gryphon Youth Travel Basketball as well. Both teams got to compete interscholastically for the first time this month.
Notes: Registrations for summer programs including strength, basketball, soccer, volleyball and more will open soon. Watch for registration information in your inbox!
Go Gryphons!

Thank you for Supporting ERA Mock Trial!
The ERA Booster Club would like to extend a big THANK YOU for your generosity. Thanks to you, the Mock Trial Team raised the money they need to go to Nationals!

Help Former School of Logic Science Teacher Mrs. Sommers Tillotson Reach her Fundraising Goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!
Superstar Student
Her journey started because she wanted to win the prize of YoYo Donuts, never having had them before, but quickly grew into something more.
Sydney went around to grocery stores in the area--such as Cub, Lunds & Byerlys, and Kowalskis--and asked for donations. Some gave her food items right away, others gave her gift cards to choose food to donate, and sometimes they said they would get back to her. Though she was really nervous to contact store employees herself, Sydney made sure to follow up and explain the importance of food donations. Besides helping her practice what she would say to her protentional donators and driving her to the stores, Sydney's parents left her in charge of planning where to go next, communicating with the store, and getting the donations.
"I want to help people that need food. I liked doing it and think I might do it for quite a few years because it makes me happy knowing that people are being helped," shared Sydney on why she was so passionate about this particular cause.
We are so impressed with Sydney's initiative, bravery, and thoughtfulness. She went above and beyond for the fundraiser and truly demonstrated CIPHER. Thank you, Sydney, for all of your hard work. We are proud to have you as part of the Eagle Ridge Academy community!
Staff Team Wins High School Volleyball Tournament
A rousing volleyball tournament took place last Thursday between student and staff teams! Six teams took part in a pool play tournament with Team Eagle, one of the Staff Teams, coming out as champions! Organized by Junior House students (with major contributions from Khaia K., President Mason H., Muthu M., Erik T., and Gretchen H.), it was an effort to bring the people together in a fun environment with a bit of competition.
The winning team, led by Executive Director Mr. Ulbrich, won delicious donuts! Said Mr. Ulbrich: "It was amazing to see staff and students playing together. We hope to plan an event like this once a quarter next year." Rematch, anyone? View all pictures at this link.
