The Eagle Eye
April 15, 2021 - Eagle Ridge Academy - Volume 17 | Issue 14
Eagle Ridge Academy is currently in FULL-SCHOOL (GRADES K-12) IN-PERSON LEARNING. Fridays will remain distance learning days.
The Minnesota Department of Health data updated today shows that Hennepin County is currently at 43.06 cases of COVID-19 per 10,000 people, while ERA zip code data is at 57.2 cases of COVID-19 per 10,000 people. In January, the ERA Board of Directors approved the new Learning Model Decision Making Matrix for grades 6-12. The Decision Making Matrix (DMM) includes and prioritizes data from within our facility versus the Hennepin County case rate alone. The DMM will be updated on Eagle Ridge Academy's website every Friday.

School of Grammar Notes - Janelle Mellgren, Principal
School of Grammar Families,
The beginning of our last quarter of this school year has arrived and it’s a time during which I normally reflect on our year so far. It has been much different than my previous years of education due to the many societal challenges we’ve faced in, truly, a short amount of time. While reflecting, I have noted a couple of things for which I’m particularly grateful: human connection through everyday relationships and the power of stories.
Our staff began our time together last August by listening to a story about how the paramedic profession developed in the United States. (If it’s not a story you’re familiar with, I’d encourage you to seek it out and learn more about it.) We talked about how the stories our students come with, our own stories, and the stories from previous generations help us understand and relate to one another in unique and powerful ways. During our most recent virtual School of Grammar assembly, I told the story of a student I was privileged to teach in California (more years ago than I care to name here) named Randy who, over the course of the year, began to shine. After the assembly, many students sought me out as they were interested in his story. To me, it was again a reminder of the power that stories hold.
An important component of relationships is the everyday interactions we have with the people around us. I have grown to appreciate them in a much deeper way this past year. The small conversations I have with students and colleagues in the hallways and lunchrooms are a simple way to connect and these often contain good stories which spark curiosity. These stories and connections are largely what motivate me to continue moving forward. It is a privilege to learn from and work with the ERA school community. As we continue to seek to provide our children with the opportunities and tools they need to thrive, let’s be sure we don’t miss the opportunities for daily connection and the intention to pause and listen to the stories of others. I'm looking forward to how the story of our 2020-21 school year will conclude.
Sincerely,
Ms. Mellgren
Summer Programming Information Coming Soon! - Amber Dahlstrom, Director of Special Services

MCA 2020-2021 Reminders - Missy Madigan, Interim District Assessment Coordinator
Dear Families,
Eagle Ridge Academy is currently administering MCA assessments for students in the following grades and subject areas. MCA assessments will continue through Friday, May 21.
- Reading: Grades 3rd - 8th and 10th
- Mathematics: Grades 3rd - 8th and 11th
- Science: Grades 5th, 8th, and students currently taking Biology
In-person students are taking MCAs during their normal school day Monday through Thursdays. Please see the images below for the scheduled testing dates or check out the school calendar.
Given COVID safety protocols, a survey sent to all distance learning families on Monday, March 22 asking for parents to register their distance learner for MCAs. A follow-up communication was included in the March 25 issue of the Eagle Eye newsletter. That survey was due Friday, March 26. If you did not complete the survey or if you selected to decline the assessments this year, you will not receive further email updates. If you responded in the survey that you want your child(ren) to participate, you will receive a detailed email from Missy Madigan, Interim District Assessment Coordinator, on Tuesday morning for that Friday’s assessments. For example, parents of children registered to take the MCA on Friday, April 23 will receive detailed communication on Tuesday, April 20.
If you did not complete the survey prior to March 26, we cannot accommodate any other students for testing this year; thus, your child(ren) will not be participating in MCAs this spring.
For any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Missy Madigan, Interim District Assessment Coordinator, at mmadigan@eagleridgeacademy.org.

Summer Opportunity for Grades 6-11
The Minnesota State High School Math League will be holding their 2021 Summer Math Institute June 28 - July 2. The Summer Math Institute is two week-long programs: one for students entering grades 7-9 in fall of 2021 and the other for students entering grades 10-12 in fall of 2021.
This year's offerings are:
Grades 7-9: Knots! You know prime numbers, but do you know prime knots? Students will explore the relatively new field of knot theory with two mathematical artists. Using algebra, diagrams, string, and other tools, we'll explore both solved and unsolved problems in this branch of topology. A minimum of Algebra 1 and some geometry is necessary background.
Grades 10-12: Probability Theory. Students will study the topic of “Probability Theory”, covering all the material necessary to solve the probability theory questions on high school contests like MSHSML, AMC, AIME and ARML. Students should have completed Algebra II and be motivated to learn challenging mathematics not taught in the typical school curriculum.
Apply at www.mnmathleague.org by April 30 to be given priority consideration. Please direct questions to ERA Math Team Coach and Minnesota All-State Math Team Coach Stephen MacLennan at 0islessthan1@gmail.com.

Help Former School of Logic Science Teacher Mrs. Sommers Tillotson Reach her Fundraising Goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!
WELCOME!
I am honored to be a candidate in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2021 Man & Woman of the Year fundraising campaign. This is a unique opportunity to unite family, friends, and philanthropic companies to find cures for blood cancers and assist patients and families as they battle these diseases.
From March 11- May 21, my team, “Delores’s Dynamos” aims to raise $50,000. If we reach this goal, a research grant in memory of my mother, Delores Sommers, will be established! I am asking for your support!
MY MOTIVATION
Like many of you, I have witnessed first-hand the effects of cancer on its victims and their families. My mother, Delores, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in the Spring of 2010. The next two years she made many trips to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and underwent multiple chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She stayed active and amazingly positive throughout the process. On May 18, 2012, my mom lost her battle with AML. I will always treasure my last moments with her, holding her hand along with my father and singing hymns to her as she passed away.
Six months later, my father, Roger, started having serious health problems. His diagnosis was elusive for a few weeks. On November 27, 2012, my brothers and I were with him when he learned he had mesothelioma. Three days later, my siblings and I were by his side as he passed. I wanted so much more time with my parents and for them to meet all of my children and watch them grow.
ABOUT LLS
This is an organization that is making an impact with the dollars it raises, and I’m proud to be associated with LLS.
Since Jan. 2017, LLS has helped advance 55 of the 65 blood cancer treatment options approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. To give you a sense of how extraordinary this is, a good year for FDA approvals would have included two to three new treatment options.
LLS’s blood cancer research is leading the way for breakthroughs in other cancers and diseases such as treatments for bone, brain, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers, melanoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and many more.
THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN!
Please consider making a difference in one or more of the following ways:
A simple tax-deductible DONATION to LLS in any amount will be greatly appreciated. Every dollar counts! Use the link on this page to contribute! You can also mail a check to the address listed at the bottom of the page. Please make checks out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and list my name in the memo line.
REACH OUT TO OTHERS you know and ask them to do the same! So many of us have a connection to cancer and want to get involved.
Does your company have a MATCHING GIFTS program that might be willing to match your donation? I’m happy to help you check.
We’re looking for SPONSORS! Could your business support our campaign with a donation? There are opportunities to showcase your company at every level of giving, including purchasing a virtual table and Grand Finale program book advertisements.
AUCTION ITEMS: These could be event tickets, a trip, gift cards, products or services, a unique experience, or anything you think would make a good addition to the live or silent auctions at the Man & Woman of the Year Gala.
I thank you in advance for supporting this incredible need. I’ll keep you posted on how the campaign goes. For now, I am grateful for your friendship and support!
Sincerely,
Carolyn Sommers-Tillotson, School of Logic Teacher 2004-2020
2021 Woman of the Year Candidate

Classroom Creations
Students in Ms. Thompson's first hour Ceramics class get to spend each morning of this quarter sitting in a circle, creating art together. In the first half of the semester-long class, they learned the basics of ceramics and have graduated from making pinch pots to working on pottery wheels. They will be working on the wheels for the rest of the school year and we cannot wait to see their creations!
Though learning the art of ceramics is enjoyable enough for her students, they also agree that getting to sit around in a circle, talk to each other, and feel as though they are part of a small community is the best part about the class.
