February 2020

Big picture

AFA is Growing!

After a successful recruiting season, we are happy to announce that applications to the AFA increased by 25% this year! We are looking forward to meeting some new faces these next couple of weekends for auditions and welcoming new members next year! Thanks to all the current students for making our Shadowers feel welcome and creating a positive culture!

Parent Volunteers Needed

As we approach the end of the school year, we could use some volunteers for the following:

  • AFA Awards Banquet: We could use parent help with setting up, coordinating with a catering service, and clean up. Our banquet is on Thursday May 27th at TJ High. If you are interested in helping, please email
  • Concession Donations and Ticket Sales: We can still use some more concessions to sell at AFA events and could use help with the ticket table at the Cabaret and our recitals. To sign up for these events, please visit this link.

AFA Cabaret is March 19th!

This year's Cabaret will take the form of a Speakeasy set in the Roaring 1920's. You can use the Secret Entrance to get into Roscoe's Club, but will you be able to solve the murder that takes place on this eventful night? Invite your friends and family to this night of fun featuring performances from AFA Music, Dance, Theatre, and an art auction featuring original works by our Art Focus students. Don't be a "wet blanket" and stay home, this "Hotsy-Totsy" joint will be jumpin'!!!

The Cabaret will be Thursday March 19th at 7:00pm in the TJ Auditorium. Flex Passes may be used. To purchase additional tickets, visit:

AFA Enrollment for Next Year

All AFA students who are not graduating need to complete the form linked here which indicates a student's intention to continue with the AFA or not. These results will help us determine how many new students we can allow in to the program for next year.

To access the form, please use the link below.

Congrats to the following students for earning a spot at the Kennedy Center Young Associates Program!

Out of Focus Workshop

At the end of the semester, AFA students were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop outside of their focus areas. It turned out to be a really fun event and a great chance for each student to experience the arts from a different perspective.

AFA Vocalists Performance

The AFA Vocal Ensemble performed on February 8 at Tuscarora High School as a guest ensemble for the A Cappella Catoctones concert. This concert included the Frederick Catoctones, the Jazz Acappella ensemble “J’Acappella” from Tuscarora High and the Street Corner Symphony, a winner of NBC’s Sing-Off. A big “Thank you” to the Catoctones for inviting us to this special event.

On February 29 several vocalists will be involved in the Solo and Ensemble festival held at Oakdale High School. At this event the students will receive a rating and comments; they may qualify for the State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

AFA Students in Local Theatre Productions

AFA theatre student Wilson Seltzer is currently in a performance of Admissions performed by the Maryland Ensemble Theatre. They have three more weekends of performances left! To get tickets, visit:

Also, congrats to AFA students Jayden Brittain and Tori Shemer for their work in the FrederickTowne Players production of Loserville!
