The Summer Scholars program provides scholarships for talented female high school students to participate in a summer academic program at one of our partner programs – some of the most rigorous and selective colleges and universities in the country.
Scholars receive a full or partial scholarship, based on demonstrated financial need, to cover tuition, room and board, travel expenses, and supplies. The Joyce Ivy Foundation works directly with our set of program partners to combine Joyce Ivy scholarships with additional financial aid provided by the summer program.
*Note: for summer 2021, the Joyce Ivy Foundation will provide scholarships for students to participate in summer programs, either virtually or in-person, pending institutions' individual decisions.
The benefits:
- Exposure to a diverse array of peers
- Exposure to a broader range of college options
- Development of leadership skills
- Academic and intellectual growth

- Scholars describe the experience as transformative.
Being a Joyce Ivy Summer Scholar is more than simply receiving a scholarship. Summer Scholars have access to high-quality college application resources, peer mentorship, and a built-in support network of successful women across a variety of industries. Scholars stay involved with the Joyce Ivy community many years after their summer program experience - once a Summer Scholar, always a Summer Scholar!

Join us for a conversation with Dr. Stephen Van Schoyck, Psychologist, and Karen Lawrence, the Founder of Camp Hi-Ho near Louisville, Kentucky, and mother of three: Ben Lawrence, Blaine Lawrence, and Jennifer Lawrence, for a unique discussion about anxiety, depression, self-medication and the power of emotional honesty in the parent-child relationship. Practical tips on instilling values such as resilience, independence, creativity, honesty, empathy, and responsibility to help teens reduce or avoid anxiety and/or depression will be explored.
Keeping it Positive: Body Image & Self Esteem (Rebroadcast*)

Current trends and misconceptions in body image, eating disorders, and self-esteem among tweens and teens will be discussed. The role of media, social media, and family in the development of healthy vs. unhealthy body beliefs and behaviors will be explored. Parents will learn about their role in the prevention of problems in these areas and when to seek additional information and help.
Our presenter is Dr. Amy Greenamyer, a Licensed Psychologist and Practice Owner of Compass Counseling. Dr. Greenamyer specializes in women’s issues, pregnancy & postpartum adjustments, and psychological and educational evaluations.

Helping Your Teen Overcome Anxiety and Depression
Tuesday, January 26th
2pm - 3pm ET
In this interactive, engaging, and judgment-free workshop, national mental health speaker and author, Zach Westerbeck, will share his story of hitting rock bottom and how he learned to overcome symptoms of anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide. During the workshop, you will learn the fundamental tools you need to help support your teen through their mental health struggles. Come prepared to ask questions and openly discuss your teen’s mental health.
Zach Westerbeck is a mental health advocate, National speaker, College Success Coach, and author of You’re Not Alone. He was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in 2016. During that period he experienced severe anxiety, deep depression, and thoughts of suicide. After hitting his rock bottom moment, he sought help and started to recover. Through his recovery process, he became Mental Health First Aid certified and now travels the country educating thousands of students on the fundamentals of mental health and recovery.

Principal's Parent Update
Student Attendance and Seminar
Students are expected to be in live, synchronous Zoom classes every day except for Wednesdays
1st/2nd Hours - 9:00-9:50
3rd/4th Hours - 10:00-10:50
6th/7th Hours - 11:00-11:50
5th Hour - 12:00-12:30
If a student is going to be absent, a parent/guardian must call them in for an excused absence within 24 hours of the absence.
(248) 865-6722 - Option 1 for Absence
If a student’s absence is not excused by a parent/guardian, then it will be marked unexcused and a teacher may not accept work missed that day.
If you have any attendance questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Glinz at jamie.glinz@wbsd.org
Seminar
On every day except for Wednesday, all teachers are available on Zoom from 1:00-2:00 for students to drop in for extra assistance, support, to get questions answered, and to receive targeted instruction as necessary.
Looking at grades from the 1st marking period, students who are choosing to attend seminars are seeing a benefit in their grades.
Grading and Final Exams
Any student grades from 1st Quarter that were below 50% will be adjusted to become a 50%.
This will allow any students who missed work or class due to connectivity issues, lack of materials, or difficulty with the transition to still have an opportunity to earn credit and a desirable grade with demonstrated proficiency during 2nd Quarter.
Final exam week will be modified to support students. There will be no traditional, comprehensive final exams.
Students who have a 70% or higher at the start of final exam week will have asynchronous opportunities for grade improvement.
Students with below 70% must attend live, synchronous zoom sessions to work directly with teachers to make up work and/or work toward grade improvement.
A teacher can excuse a student from the live attendance requirement at their discretion based on individual student performance.
Students will receive a form to indicate if they wish to take a class for a pass (G), instead of for a letter grade on their transcript, if they receive a 60% or higher.
The G will replace a letter grade and will not factor into GPA calculations.
Please note that taking a G instead of a letter grade will show as such on a transcript when applying to colleges/universities. Also, please consult with a counselor regarding this option when it comes to NCAA eligibility for student athletes who may be participating at the college/university level.
Meal Distribution
No cost curbside meals are available to all children 18 and under. Meals are distributed every Wednesday at West Bloomfield HS from 11:30am-12:30pm and 3:30-4:30pm and Roosevelt Elementary from 11:00am-1:00pm. About the Ron Brown Scholarship
The Ron Brown Scholarship honors the legacy of Ronald H. Brown through a selective scholarship program that advances higher education for community-minded and intellectually gifted African Americans. RBSP competitively awards Ron Brown Scholars four-year $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 each year) to the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship – the four pillars of the late Ronald H. Brown’s mission to uplift people of all races, cultures and ethnicities – especially our disadvantaged youth.
Recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. Ron Brown scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. Since the Program’s inception in 1996, more than 300 students have been designated as Ron Brown Scholars.
Applicants for the Ron Brown Scholarship MUST be graduating high school seniors at the time of their application.
About the Guided Pathway Support (GPS) Program
The Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS) helps African-American juniors and seniors navigate the path to top colleges by directing students to the most comprehensive and reliable resources available. GPS teaches students how to prepare for, apply to, pay for, persist in and graduate from college.
Using our “high tech and high touch” approach, GPS narrows the college access gap using tele-mentoring through our exclusive GPS Workplace by Facebook community, direct interactions with admissions professionals and exposure to successful peer role models. GPS empowers high school juniors, seniors, their parents and their guidance counselors throughout the college application process.
With GPS, the messengers complement the message. GPS students are mentored and guided by Ron Brown Scholars and Captains. As opposed to traditional mentoring programs, Ron Brown Scholars and Captains are similar in racial identity, age, income, and life experiences to meaningfully engage GPS students. They have already successfully navigated college journeys from hardship into America’s top colleges and universities, graduate schools and corporations and are eager to guide others.
For more information about the Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS), please contact Kiya Jones at (434) 964-1588 or by email at kjones@ronbrown.org.
