students are in small classes
students study Te Reo Maori, Digital Technologies, Science, Music, Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Numeracy and Literacy with teachers from our senior school as part of their rotation system. This supports the transition of students into Year 9, and they get specialist teachers to support the Year 7 and 8 curriculum.
have a curriculum where back mapping from our senior school curriculum flows down to Year 7. This means our students are better prepared for the Year 9 programme.
students have a timetable which enables them to build Resilience as part of their transition as they learn to navigate their way around our school
students are supported through a very good transition programme from Years 8 to 9.Transition from Year 8 to 9 is more seamless as we have accurate data and teachers can easily communicate with previous teachers if issues arise
all have their own allocated chromebook for use throughout the year
students have access to our Student Support Space, Learning Hub and our Special Needs Learning area

we are a Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) school which is based on our values of Aumangea, Whakamana, Kotahitanga and Manaakitanga
Well done to all of Year 9 students who completed their Sustainability unit with the planting of 200 native trees at Toby’s farm. This is a great example of manaakitanga and giving back to our community. I would also like to mention the Year 10 unit on Conflict and the fundraiser for Ukraine where the funds raised went to supporting the Red Cross, another example of manaakitanga and giving back to our global community. These units of work are part of our cross curricular units leaving the classroom to learn and learning with all subjects being connected around the same idea. I look forward to hearing about your learning over the coming term and the exciting activities your teachers have got planned.
To our Year 7&8 students what a pleasure it has been to see you improve your poi, haka and waiata since you have started, I love hearing you practise from my office. Keep working hard and aim for excellence.
To our senior students and our Year 10 who are embarking on the last of your internal assessments for the year and starting on externals. We need you to change gear and give 100% effort in all of your classes. Make the most of the time you have here. We all know that you are capable of great things but this will require some hard work, dig in you can do this. Week 7 we will be starting derived grade exams. Prepare well, these exams are important, I know your teachers will be starting to have these conversations with you in class about what is expected. We are counting down to the senior ball which will be a great celebration for us towards the end of the term. And also the Vic trip to Wellington which is a great opportunity for students to see how university works.
I would also like to welcome our new Head of Faculty of the English department Mrs Scott. We are very excited to have her join our team. I know that the students will show manaakitanga to her.
Caring for one another is important manaakitanga, this extends to your classmates, your year group, other students and all of our staff including teachers, the office staff, support staff, ground staff and the canteen staff. I will be looking and listening for kindness and caring over the term, that's also important.

Our Integrated Learning Unit for Term 2 was – How to Bee.
Students learnt about the life cycle of a bee, the importance of bees in food chains, the anatomy of bees, bee hives and bee products. To end the term students learnt about manufacturing, marketing and advertising bee products. Each of the classes created products such as deodorants, lip balms, spice condiments, candles, bee wraps, honey cupcakes, honey soy chicken nibbles and honey waffles. Term 2 was jammed packed, offering our students wonderful learning experiences. Students displayed Kotahitanga where they worked together with their peers and teachers.
What’s is happening in Term 3!
Unit-Theme
This term, we will be incorporating our school value Manaakitanga with our unit Telling our stories. Students will learn about international, national and local stories. Myths and Legends are an important part of every culture. People use these to explain their world from long ago and describe places and environments in different ways. Such stories will increase our understanding of the past.
Maths
Our focus is to continue developing number knowledge and strategies. This term our students will also explore Statistics – probability, mean, mode and median, bar graphs, tally charts, pictographs and stem and leaf plots.
Writing
Our focus is Narrative writing. Students will develop the knowledge of how to build a climax in a story? How to introduce the problem? and How a problem is developed?
Health – Hauora
Our students continue to develop and focus on Navigating the journey. Students are developing an understanding about their growth and development. Kahungunu Executive delivered the Pūhuruhurutanga - Puberty Presentation with the support of Tihei Rangatahi co-cordinator, Miss Hineiaia Te Amo and Transition worker, Dominique. This was a great opportunity for our students to be involved in a presentation presented by our local role models.
Kapa Haka
This year we will be hosting the Wairoa District Primary Schools Kapa Haka Festival in week 10. Our students have been working hard and we are proud of our student’s efforts, participation and motivation. Well done Year 7&8 students!

10 K Cross-curricular
10K had a day in the life of a soldier as part of their cross-curricular learning. We started by making soup then working as a team to make and lead hybrid games that a soldier could play when having down time in the trenches. Staff Kauraria and some Services Academy students lead us through drills and co-operative activities. As a team we carried logs. Through these activities we demonstrated our school values of Resilience, problem solving skills and Manaakitanga. In the afternoon we ate ANZAC biscuits and drank tea.
Calling for Volunteers
We are asking if there are any parents who might be available to help set up for the ball (Friday 23rd) and more importantly tidying up on the Saturday 24th. Please contact the school office.

Service Academy
On Monday 27 June 2022, Wairoa College Services Academy students participated in a five day Bush Craft camping exercise in Whirinaki Forest, Te Urewera National Park near Murupara.
No phones, internet, or netflixs required for this camp. Instead, students were given the basic essential items for camping which included packs, tents, wet weather kit, cookers, warm clothing and military 24 hour ration packs. Students were assessed on their navigation skills being able to orientate a map, provide a six figure grid reference and to lead their respective group to a certain location. For meals, everyone was shown how to cook a ration pack then instructed to fend for themselves. To put it bluntly, if you don't cook you don't eat.
To preserve our forests, it was important to teach our students the environmental care code and the responsibility each of us has by ensuring we remove all rubbish, stay on formed tracks and to use the facilities provided. Overall, an enjoyable experience capped off with a long deserved shower and relaxation at Debretts hot pools in Taupo.

Services Academy Advanced Leaders Course 01 - 05 August 2022
Rawiri Haliburton and Lexus McRoberts from Wairoa College Services Academy attended the Advanced Leaders course held at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Ohakeha.
An opportunity to further enhance leadership skills and to reconnect with other Academies and Youth Development instructors from the Airforce, Army and Navy. Students were introduced to the military orders format known as GSMEAC. A series of tasks were given to each student to plan, deliver orders (Brief) and to execute said task. A focus on growth and to help eliminate the barriers some of our students face when public speaking and commanding a group.
On Thursday evening, a formal dinner was hosted by students with all Academy Directors present including four soldiers from the Army and one Navy Officer. These young men and women were invited to share their journey from being a student to becoming a part of the New Zealand Defence Force. The common denominator in this situation is they too were Services Academy students back in 2018.
Overall, a great time was had by all. Our next focus is now on the Adventure Challenge in September. To be continued..................................................

Ikura / Manaakitia te whare tangata
We are delighted to share that Wairoa College is participating in the Ikura / Manaakitia te
whare tangata, the period products in schools’ initiative.
Research shows that 77 per cent of students would rather fail a subject than have their peers
know they have their period and approximately one in 12 reported having missed school due to
lack of access to period products. This highlights the stigma surrounding periods which we
hope to change. Through the initiative we will also help to:
Reduce barriers to access education
Reduce financial strain on families to provide products
Improve attendance
Increase participation in sporting and cultural activities
The Ministry of Education is providing period products (pads and tampons) to students to
allow them to manage their monthly cycle. We will have product available for students to pick
up and take home, as well as having dispenser units in our school bathrooms.
For more information on the initiative, please visit: Ministry of Education - Ikura initiative.

Attendance Draw
It goes without saying that good attendance is essential if students are to make progress at school. It has been another difficult year with Covid and influenza so it is really good to see that a large number of our students are showing resilience and making it to school whenever they are able.
A prize attendance draw was made in our recent full school assembly. To be eligible for the draw, students needed to have an attendance level of 95% or higher. There were two winners drawn from each house with the winners receiving a drinks bottle full of goodies:
Lockie Morrel and Sophie Vennell (Manu)
Tylah-Jade Moten and Owen Verner (Te Toki))
Mahinarangi Hulme and Ryka Swann (Nga Taaiha)
Turi Paku and Kefir Kirwan (Patu)
Well done to the winners and to all of the other entrants who will each receive a completed KARMA card for showing our school value of Aumangea.
We will hold another draw for Term 3 attendance at the beginning of next term.

Learner Licence
Another group learning session was held today for Learner Licence. 7 students passed their Learner Licence. Congratualations.
Learners Licence courses are provided at no cost to the students. Tutor is Lu Multsaid. The next course is planned for Wednesday August 31. The students must be aged 16 and have a full birth certificate and photo ID.
Restricted Driving & Defensive Driving Courses
Recently we had a group of young drivers graduate from the Defensive Driving Course. Students completed 8 hours of theory for the course which was all about hazards, risks on the road and how to be mindful of them and drive safely. They also had a practical drive with an instructor. This course was presented by Mcinnes Driver Training who have an office here in Wairoa. Successful completion of this course leads to having 6 months taken off the time required to complete a full driver licence so it is well worthwhile. There will be another defensive driving course next term and students can see Ms Hayward to sign up for this.
Restricted driving lessons are ongoing. These are run by Lu Multsaid. If students would like to register for either of these courses they should see Ms Hayward as soon as possible
EIT Trades Academy
It was awesome to travel back to EIT trades academy in Gisborne. It was like the students had never left and they got straight back into the swing of things. Students are in the process of completing tasks and assessments. The students should all be very proud of themselves and their achievements.
Panapa Keefe cooked up a lovely batch of delicious ANZAC biscuits in hospitality.

Gateway
Eight students embarked on a journey down to Napier to an infrastructure course. What a great experience for our wahine to sit among inspiring woman. They told us of their journeys in the industry and how they started out to where they are now. They encouraged out young wahine to give it ago. As long as you have a "can do attitude" you too can go far. A young local lady Lynda, started in the industry, on a lollipop at the age of 16, she then progressed into the field of driving a roller, truck driving, laying asphalt and now 10 years later she is in management in Waipawa. There were many fun activities to participate in while getting hands on experience. The students came away with many prizes and giant smiles on their faces. I recommend to any young wahine that if they get the opportunity to attend this course take it. You will thoroughly enjoy it!
CACTUS Term 3
32 students have signed up to compete CACTUS 30 this term. There are 22 students from Wairoa College and 10 students from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngati Kahungunu o Te Wairoa.
CACTUS 30 began on Monday and will run for 8 weeks every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 6am. The longest day will be on Saturday 24th September followed by a Graduation dinner.
RYDA Road Safety Programme 14 th June 2022
On Tuesday the 14 th June our Year 12 and Year 13 Wairoa College students participated in
the RYDA programme through completing a series of interesting and interactive workshops
onsite and offsite observing a trained race car driver conducting safe stopping processes.
Students participated in these workshops positively and interacted well with facilitators.
Student’s learnt about the following key parts of driver’s awareness.
- Getting behind the wheel of a car as a young driver, or being a young passenger with a novice driver, is said to be among the most dangerous things a person will do in
their entire life.
- Young people aged 15-24 represent less than 15% of the population for around one quarter of deaths and injuries on our roads.
- Most driver education focuses on the mechanics of driving to get a licence and do not cover the broader or cognitive side of driving. These areas, if not understood,
can increase a young person’s risk on the road, including as a passenger.
- The most effective approaches to road safety education involve a whole school approach which is embedded in the NZ Curriculum and reinforced by the classroom
teacher.
The RYDA programme was very helpful to our students as it complemented the curriculum
and delivered sensitive messages according to best practice that can be time-consuming and
challenging. It included interactive workshop in classroom group sizes. The following
feedback was received from the RYDA facilitators in regards to the positive contribution
from our students in this programme.
“Your students were a credit to your school both in their behaviour and the manner in
which they engaged with the presenters and our volunteers. We were impressed with their
attentiveness, and trust that our potentially life-saving messages will stand them in good
stead for the future.”

FINANCIAL CAPABILITIES COURSE
We have been very lucky to have been invited to involve our Year 13 School leavers in a financial capability course, run by the Wairoa Financial Literacy Group.
This is a FREE course, teaching valuable and essential skills to our students to help them manage their finances, plan for the use of money and be better prepared to avoid debt in the future. It is hoped that all of our year 13s will take the opportunity to complete this course.
There are also 10 NCEA Level 3 credits available on the completion of the full course. Students are given morning tea and lunch while on the course. We are very grateful for and appreciative of the efforts of the Wairoa Financial Literacy staff for their commitment to our students.
