Astro Message - April
#CelebrateLadd #Ladd50 - 50 years of Excellence
Awesome April
Dear Astro Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break with family and friends. We have enjoyed welcoming our Astros back to school this week. They came back happy and ready to learn.
Recently, there have been some family inquires and social media postings regarding the amount of time students have for lunch. At the elementary level, schools have approximately 35-40 minutes for lunch and recess, with flexibility for students who may need additional time to finish eating. At Ladd Acres, we have a 20 minute lunch block in the cafeteria followed by a 15 minute recess. If students need more time to finish lunch, they are given the choice to stay in the cafeteria or come to the office conference room to do so. In addition, many teachers have a policy in their rooms where students can finish eating there after recess. Prior to lunch, all classrooms have time for a snack break. If students don't come with a snack, we provide them with a healthy option. In addition, students have an additional recess besides the one at lunch where they can move and socialize. We do our best to ensure we are providing the appropriate number and length of breaks, while also maximizing instructional time for students. Please note that in 2020-21, the HSD Bond will provide Ladd Acres with a new gym. This will allow for a little more wiggle room in scheduling. If you have any questions, please call me and I would be happy to meet with you.
As we head into the last 11 weeks of the school year, we have a jam-packed schedule for the month of April including state testing and our Science-Extravaganza fair. Don't forget to join us on Friday, April 5th as we celebrate 50 years of Excellence together. The dance party begins at 6:30 p.m. in our gym. In early May our Kinder orientation will take place . Much of this is listed below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at the office.
Have a fabulous, beautiful April!
With warm regards,

Spring is in the air! As we approach the 4th and final quarter of this year, learning is in full bloom! We begin to explore more engineering and design standards through the creation of “mouse houses” while learning to care for the environment. Please send a recyclable material with your child, such as a cereal box, plastic bottle, or other such item that a young mind might use to create a house for a mouse :-).
We will continue to act as scientists and explore the needs of plants this month as well. The kids will plant their own bean seeds, care for, observe, and journal about them as they grow.
As always, we are mathematicians, readers and writers! The kids are learning about numbers in base ten and measurement in math this month. In literacy, our little authors continue to hone their reading and writing skills daily.
This time of year is so exciting in kindergarten, the seeds of change are blossoming in many ways. We are thankful for the privilege of teaching your littles, and love watching them grow!

Hello from third grade!
Math – we are working on finishing measurement and data, and going into fractions. We are also working with 2 step word problems (both understanding and using a strategy to solve). In literacy, we are starting to use current events to research and write another opinion paper. We are also using illustrations from fiction to analyze characters, setting, and mood of a story. We will also work on point-of-view. In science, we are halfway through a weather and climate unit. We will also begin familiarizing ourselves with SBA (formerly SBAC) problems so we can be used to the screen/type of questions asked.
Finally, we have several fun field trips coming up (Tryon Creek and Washington County Museum), and continue to collect permission slips and donations for them! We also have a guest speaker coming in from Wolfways to discuss wolf traits and give info about wolves. It is a great presentation and a lot of fun!

April is a big month! We will start state testing on April 18 and continue through out the month. It is very important your student be at school on time, have a good breakfast and plenty of sleep.
Content Rotations: Mrs. Nguyen is teaching vision and light. Ms. Nicholas is teaching narrative writing and Mr. Salzwedel is teaching about Lewis and Clark and the Oregon Trail.
In math we are going to be focusing on double digit multiplication and higher level division problems.
In reading we are focusing on text features in informational text.
WE have heard that there are some neighborhood concerns about lunch times. Please be assured, that your child gets 20 minutes of time to eat. Please discuss with your child about using lunch time.

5th grade News
April and Spring are upon us.
Science Fair- Students should be working on science Fair projects at home. Boards have been sent home and are due Monday April 22nd. The night of the Science Fair is Thursday April 26th, students are expected to attend and enjoy their root beer floats.
State Testing- We will begin next Tuesday, the 9th with our 5th grade science test. The Reading test is broke up into 2 parts, the CAT (reading) and a Reading/ Writing performance task. The CAT will take place on the 18th of April and the Performance task is scheduled for April 30-May 2nd. Attendance is extremely important. Students should come to school well rested. We suggest that all students eat a nutritious breakfast.
Your fifth graders have grown so much this year. We look forward to the final quarter of the year.

Wellness Classes
Over the last few years, we have been asked about our Wellness program at Ladd Acres.
The ideas and concepts are designed to help kids identify and deal with their emotions so that they are more ready for academic work and good social interactions.
Rehearsing and practicing these concepts will actually rewire our brains, making them easier for the student to use when they are stressed. If you have questions, Mrs. Owens is happy to answer them.
Counselor
As our 3rd through 6th graders begin their SBAC testing here are some helpful tips to bolster self confidence and competency. Students who worry they won’t do well (for whatever reason) and students with an anxious temperament who worry about making mistakes or performing in general, from singing in music class or going up to bat at baseball- tend to feel more test anxiety and are more prone to heightened worry during this time of the school year. Talking with your students at home about the helpful strategies below can support getting through the test and putting the brakes on any anxiety that might creep in.
Have a plan. For example, don’t spend too much time on any one question, read each answer and then cross out the ones you know aren’t right to help you narrow your choices, pick an answer and stick with it. We all have a tendency to second guess ourselves but it can lead to wasted time and wrong answers.
Break things up. When you start to feel panicked, look for a way to change focus. Take a moment to take deep breaths, focus on a happy memory or close your eyes for a moment. Have a positive self talk mantra that works for you, “I can do hard things.”
Practice calming techniques. Ask your students which mindfulness technique is their favorite to use in class.
Accept when you don’t know something. Sometimes the best way to manage anxiety is to accept that you don’t know the answer to a question and move on. Focus on the next questions ahead and do your best.
