Pershing Updates

April 26, 2020

Good Evening Pershing Families,

I hope this message finds all families doing well, staying healthy and safe.

We have one week of Distance Learning under our belt! As we begin a second week in this new territory, please remember it is new to us, as well. For some, it was an easy and successful transition. For others, it was frustrating, challenging, or impossible. As a staff, Pershing Elementary is here for you. We are working together to monitor and track who may need extra support, whether that means a phone call to talk through a process, technology support, or an adjustment in assignments. We highly value flexibility during this time as we know that every situation is unique. If you need a phone call, a check-in, someone to problem solve with you, I’m here, along with our office staff, instructional assistants and your child’s teacher to try to provide the support you need. Reach out to me at when or if you need your team! If I haven’t responded in a timely manner, please email again and be sure to “cc” your child’s teacher on the email.

Posted to our school’s webpage is the agreed upon “Grading Practices” during Distance Learning. Our District Leaders and the San Juan Teachers’ Association built this agreement together. My hope is that it provides some relief and reassurance for many parents and students. We know that Distance Learning is not providing the same level of learning experience and support our students would get at school in the classroom each day. Teachers use assessment tools to determine where students need additional support and what they are ready for next, and we will use that same process to determine strategies to “catch kids up” in areas where they have may have fallen behind due to school closures.

PS - Future Info to Come: More information will come in the following weeks regarding yearbook distribution, process for sale of late order yearbooks, pick-up process for student personal items from classrooms, and more. We don’t have information, but we are working through logistics as the District reviews procedures to ensure health and safety first. If you have questions, please send them to me.

Articulation to Middle School

Attention 6th Grade Students Enrolled for Andrew Carnegie for 2020-2021:

Students who will attend Andrew Carnegie Middle School for 7th grade next year must make course selections for next year this week. Please visit the Carnegie website here for more information:

Attention 5th and 6th Grade students transitioning to Pasteur Middle School for 2020-2021, a message from Mr. Dolan, Pasteur Principal:

For those students and families that may have questions about Pasteur’s Articulation/Class selection Process, please know that you haven’t missed out on anything, yet. We are still working out the bugs for our “distance" articulation/class selection process. Pasteur’s articulation days should be happening in the first week of May. We are hoping it will be all done electronically/remotely. With that being said, our goal is to make sure there are as few problems as possible and it is as accurate as it can be. This will be our first time doing it electronically and there needs to be a backup plan for those who can't access it or could be confused by the process. As it gets closer to May, and we have finalized the process, we will notify parents and students via email, phone call and we will have information on our website as well.

Thank you for your patience and support as we finalize this.

Michael J. Dolan
