Springtown Middle School
October 2016
From the Principal's Desk...
September was a great month at SMS! We have been well represented in football, volleyball, and cross country with several wins in the season so far and we expect to report continued success. Band and choir are also underway with some very talented students, as well, in preparation for concerts that they will perform at toward the end of the month.
Distinctions from TEA came in for the 2015-2016 school year. SMS earned distinctions in Social Studies, Student Progress, and Closing Performance Gaps. Congratulations to all of our students and staff for their hard work and dedication!!!
As we begin a new six weeks, we continue to encourage students to take advantage of before and after school tutorials. Help your student monitor their grades by logging in to Skyward on a weekly basis and staying updated with what they are doing in class by accessing their teacher's lesson plans from the SMS website.

Hints For Homework & Studying
Help your middle schooler make homework and studying go like clockwork with these strategies:
Think It Through: Before your child begins have him/her make a to-do list. Then suggest he/she numbers the tasks from toughest to easiest, and start with the hard stuff. This “save the easiest for last” strategy will help him/her finish on a high note. Perhaps then they will be inspired to get in some extra studying for upcoming tests.
Think About Time: Ask your child to consider different time slots to get the work done. For instance, maybe a weekend morning or Sunday night. Also SMS students have extra time before or after school to get help from certified teachers if needed.
Think Positive: Help your middle grader see homework and studying as a chance to prove his/her independence by getting her work done on time and doing it without assistance from you! Boost his/her confidence by saying, “Homework gives you a chance to show all that you know.” Then, give them a thumbs up for the effort!
