A Message from our Principal...
Dear Jefferson Families;
We did it!!! We made it to the finish line of the 2020-2021 school year. Most importantly, this school year, more than any other, was undertaken and managed by all of us. And by we, I mean parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, guardians, students, neighbors, and of course, every staff member. We worked together to make this school year meaningful for every student. The year had many ups and downs. Sometimes we had our finest hour, sometimes we came up short. Regardless, we persevered and kept trying. Everyone gave their all to create an effective instructional environment. No one ever gave up. In the final analysis, we are truly a wiser community of learners - all of us!
It is our hope that everyone gets a chance to rest and recover this summer. We also know that students want to keep learning. Especially in the past few months, students have shown that they love school, love to learn, and showed that they are making measurable progress. We want them to keep that momentum growing. As you will read in this newsletter, there are some programs that the district will host that your family might take advantage of, such as summer school, REACH, and jump start. In addition, here are five more ideas that might be helpful to encourage students to do:
Read for 20 minutes every day.
Go to the Diggins Library. The library is a beautiful space, and its cool! The library staff are running a fun summer reading program. It is recommended that students read at 4-6 books each summer. And if possible, a read-aloud caps off the perfect day.
Use the internet to take a Virtual Field Trip: Students might enjoy seeing places when they might not be able to go in person. There are literally thousands to choose from. Most of the major museums, art institutes, aquariums and planetariums have fabulous virtual field trips. So does NASA, The Smithsonian, and most of the US National Parks. Some well-known ‘trips’ are run by The British Museum, The Museum of Natural History, The Louvre, The Boston Children’s Museum.
Write something every day. Encourage your child to keep a journal. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but they should write or draw something daily in a notebook where they can go back to review their thoughts. Reflecting upon their day is one of the best ways to encourage self-directed learning.
Think about math in everyday life. Children can cook, find recipes, estimate and calculate grocery bills, play numbers games, prepare a family’s summer budget, and really anything having to do with numbers.
It has been an honor and a privilege to spend 176 school days with your child - virtually and in person. It was not the year we’d have hoped for, but it sure will be one for us to always remember. I tell students - once a Jefferson student, always a Jefferson student. We will always be here for your child and your family. If there is anything that we can do to help your child learn and grow, please let us know.
Most sincerely,
Dr. Judy Floeter and Mrs. Tasha Rayas

Just a reminder...
It's never too early to start thinking about the upcoming school year and the supplies your student(s) will need. The Salvation Army has reached out to our district and asked us to spread the word about their "Back to School Program". Please call the The Salvation Army Corps Community Center, 815-455-2769, located at 290 W Crystal Lake Avenue, Crystal Lake to receive an application and set up a time to pick up a backpack. Their requirement to receive a free backpack is the following: eligibility is based on annual household income that is $52,400 or less for a family of four (they make adjustments for larger families or those affected by Covid-19) and living in McHenry County. To qualify for assistance, families must provide the following information:
1. One form of verification of residency in McHenry County- driver's license, utility bill, lease agreement, etc.
2. Proof of household monthly income- pay stubs, child support, social security, etc.
3. Birth Certificates for each of the children receiving a backpack (they no longer take social security cards only).
Applications will be accepted and the backpacks are distributed at the same time in Crystal Lake on:
Thursday, August 5- 10am-12pm / 1pm-3pm / 5pm-7pm
Friday, August 6- 10am-12pm / 1pm-3pm / 5pm-7pm
Saturday, August 7- 8am-12pm

Kids and College - Summer fun for Kids through MCC
We’re taking our 2021 summer camps virtual with hands-on activities students can do at home!
Summer 2021 courses are available in culinary and baking, drawing, reading and writing, video game design, math, chemistry, theater, and more! Most Summer 2021 classes include a materials kit that parents pick up on campus prior to the start of class. Students can use these supplies to make some seriously cool creations!
All Summer 2021 classes will be held via Zoom. In addition to spending two hours of class time with instructors via Zoom, campers will start and end each day with a group meeting to interact, discuss the day’s activities, and make new friends. Plus, a very special guest (MCC’s friendly mascot Roary!) will be there to greet campers each Monday!

JUMPSTART
Jumpstart is a week-long ‘camp’ to help students develop relationships with their peers, acclimate to their school building, and learn skills and strategies to help them be successful in the upcoming school year.
Jumpstart is not academic in nature. The purpose of the program is to address each student’s social-emotional needs and help them feel comfortable and at ease with the structure and requirements of in-person school.
Jumpstart is projected to run week-long sessions starting at the end of July. More details will be available in the upcoming months.
