Valentines <3 - repeat
Students will exchange valentines on Wednesday <3 If you think of it, send them to school in red, pink or white :) Thank you for following the guidelines below, which we have learned to be super helpful over the years...
- if sending valentines (optional), please send 1 for each student in your child's homeroom (18 in GAW; 19 in VONG)
- candy valentines are fine, but we will not open/eat any valentines at school
- *DO NOT address who the valentine is to - leave blank or write friend; this helps significantly with passing them out in a timely manner
- Students will decorate a bag to collect their valentines in at school, so no need to worry about that
- Send valentines in on Wed Feb 14th, or before, and we can house them at school
- here is the link to sign up/send something in if you'd like :)
THANK YOU! <3
Lunch Visitors
You are absolutely welcome to join your child for lunch! <3 If planning to do so, know that Kindergarten brunch ;) begins at 10:50am. You are welcome to bring food in for your child, but please do not distribute food or treats to any other children. Also, for safety & security reasons, know that visitors are asked to say their goodbyes in the lunchroom and check out with the welcome center. Visitors will not be allowed to join for recess. Thank you for your help and cooperation with this.
Subtraction
Students have now been introduced to subtraction - take apart or take away. Students are practicing to tell take away stories by simply rolling a dice, drawing that many circles on their board, and then flipping over a picture card to see what their story should be about. So if they flip over a picture of a strawberry they might say: There were 5 strawberries on my plate. I ate 2 of them. How many strawberries are left? While many of the kids like to draw strawberries, they are also learning that they can be more efficient mathematicians by just drawing 5 red circles instead :)

3D Shape Robots! - repeat
Each year, we invite students/families to participate in the optional project, of creating a 3D shape robot from recycled materials! This is to extend the learning that the kids have been doing this past week about 3D shapes including the: cube, cone, sphere, cylinder & rectangular prism. If you choose to participate, please be sure that your child can carry the robot down to the classroom independently, or, you can drop it off and leave it at the welcome center, for us to grab & carry down. Please do not use any glass or breakable materials when creating the robot. We like for the robots to be on display for the student led conference night, so ask that robots be sent in by Monday March 11th, or before, if participating :)
Student Led Conference Night - repeat
On Wednesday March 13th, all classrooms at Bay Lane will be open for student led conferences! While each BLE classroom may structure the night differently, know that school will be open from 4pm - 6:30pm. Come anytime within this window that works for your family. This is one of our favorite nights each school year, as students lead you through their space and showcase their learning <3
PBIS Weekly Update
Week of Feb 5th: Mindfulness Lesson #8
High Frequency Words Weekly Update
***We will bold edits to this section each week
You have probably heard these words referred to as sight words, snap words, star words, heart words and/or high frequency words. High frequency words refer to words that students will encounter often in text. These are words we will explicitly teach to our students.
Students have learned: a, the, my, me, I, like, look, at, is, here, see, this, an, in, it, and, am, go, no, so, we, be, on, he, she, can, up, to, do
New word(s) coming up this week:
By the end of Kindergarten, the goal is for students to have list A, or 25 words combined from list A & B, mastered.
Here are some ideas for fun and engaging ways to practice these words at home! The more sight words your child knows by heart, the stronger he or she will feel as a reader & writer :)
You also may have heard that these are words students should memorize... while we do want for students to know how to read and write these words with automaticity, we also want for them to pay attention to the letters/sounds. While some of these words are not spelled the way you'd expect, there are at least parts of the word that are as expected when thinking about the sounds that letters make.
