Battle At Artemisium
At about 11:45 AM, the Persians form a half circle to encircle the Greeks at Artemisium. The Greeks sail out to meet them and a naval slugging match appears. The Athenians are the toughest fighters for the Greeks, the Egyptians for the Persians (Egypt is now a Persian territory). None have an advantage but it seems that the Greeks came out the worst. Half of their navy is badly damaged and sails south but the Persians probably lost more men. When both sides gave up the fight and sailed away. If Themistocles's tactics didn't work, they would've been beaten. With the fleet beaten, the Persian navy would've been able to sail right into Thermoplyae, and demolished Leonidas, and taken over Greece.
Accomplishments/Achievements
Battle at Salamis
The Athenians had fled to Salamis after the Battle of Thermopylae in August, 480 BC, while the Persians occupied and burned their city. This is when the major navy battle between Themistocles, and Xerxes erupted. Surprisingly, the small yet deadly Athenian fleet caught the Persians off guard, and destroyed about 1/5 of the Persians Entire Fleet. This resulted in a major win for the Greeks, and a devastating loss for the Persians. If it wasn't for Themistocles's battle tactics, the Greeks wouldn't have stood a chance.
