2ND AMENDMENT
The Right to Bear Arms
THE SECOND AMENDMENT
The Second Amendment gives the people the right to bear arms and to form a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State.
The Second Amendment's History
The second amendment was not always how it is today. When it was first created, it was meant to allow citizens to own weapons in case of a federal emergency and they needed to form a militia immediately. Although, after the Revolutionary War, that was changed because the government believed that the citizens were not trained well enough to serve. This caused a debate to begin between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists to decide if the citizens should be allowed to own armed weapons or not. Luckily, the amendment was passed because everyone agreed that the government had as much right to take away the freedom to own weapons as they did to take away the freedom of speech and protest.
The Development
The second amendment was ratified in 1791, on December 15. Though the amendment changed over time; for a while blacks were not allowed to own weapons in some states. But, now people are allowed to own guns, excluding criminals and the mentally ill. In addition to that, citizens cannot have weapons on sensitive properties, for example schools or government buildings.
In Conclusion
The second amendment was created on September 25, 1789 . It was created so that the common people could gather and form a militia during war time, but that was changed after the government decided that the citizens were not reliable enough to serve. On December 15, 1791, the amendment was ratified, but changed overtime based on other amendments. Now, thanks to the second amendment, almost every citizen can be armed to protect themselves from danger.
