Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 31st March 2017
All aboard!
We are always thrilled to be able to offer our children so many educational experiences at this school, including visits to the huge variety of learning environments Yorkshire has to offer. All this can only continue to go ahead with the ongoing support of every parent, so thank you to all who contribute.
This week we had two visits. The first was to the National Railway Museum in York on Monday, where Miss Hardy tells us they had a super time. They explored the whole museum, attended two interactive workshops 'Stephenson's Rocket' where the children learnt actions to explain how a steam train works and 'Off to the seaside' where they got to dress up as Victorians and experience First and Third class carriages on a train from this era. Finally we took a trip on the miniature railway. Thank you to all the parent helpers for coming with us!
staffing update
This week we said farewell and thank you to Mandy Simpson our gymnastics coach. Mandy has had a long involvement with Cathedral School and has always been supportive, promoting our school in Ripon and the local area. The children have all improved through her coaching and the staff have benefitted from learning from her. As she said herself, we feel we have reached the 'end of an era' as she leaves us this term. Mandy will continue to run the successful Thirsk School of Gymnastics with her own well equipped facility in the town.
This week we also say thank you and farewell to Miss Smithson our Nursery teacher. Miss Smithson has been poorly for some time and decided not to return. We wish her a speedy recovery and all the best for the future. We are delighted that Mrs Robinson has agreed to continue in her cover role and will teach the Nursery class until the summer holidays.
comic relief final total ..
.. is £424.65! A huge thank you to everyone who baked and donated cakes, buns and other goodies for the cake stall run by the Year 6 charity group. Thank you also for purchasing them, and to all the children for participating in the activities at lunch time last Friday. Everyone enjoyed raising such a spectacular amount of money for charity.
nursery consultation
From September, our nursery will continue to be an amazing experience for all the young children who enjoy high quality play-based provision including role play, sand, water, construction, reading, mark making, and outside play. However, we are also proposing some changes to enable the school to provide the new extended entitlement to families eligible for 30 hours funded nursery care from September 2017. We would like to provide more flexible nursery arrangements in addition to meeting parents’ childcare needs by extending the length of the nursery day to provide chargeable before and after school care. In summary, we are proposing a breakfast club from 8.15 to 8.45, morning nursery session 8.45-11.45, supervised lunch break, then afternoon nursery 12.15-3.15. Also available will be an after school club until 5.45pm.
These changes are proposed for the nursery but the before and after school childcare will run in conjunction with similar provision for the rest of school, details to follow.

Lent Challenge continues
We are still enthusiastically trying out a new challenge every day for Lent. Our favourite this week was definitely, 'Give a nice compliment to somebody'!
Year 4 Again!
Well done Year 4, winners of the reading raffle again! A very slight drop to 97% of children in their class reading 5 times or more this week (as noted by an adult in their reading journal), but still excellent.
