Welcome to the End of the Semester
This is the last week of first semester. The last day for students to turn in work is Thursday, January 28. Please be sure to have your Spartan check their teacher's Google Classrooms for further information.
Second Semester Schedules
Starting Monday, January 25, students will be able to see their second semester schedules on Skyward. If you see any empty periods or periods with two classes, please call the office and they will let you know what your Spartan's schedule will be starting Friday, January 29. Students will see new invitations to Google Classrooms Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

DEADLINE EXTENDED!
Make sure your student gets in the SMS yearbook!
We are changing the way we do our yearbook pictures this year. Students are able to take a selfie and use it for their picture. We still hope to have school pictures later in the year, which can be used for their Yearbook picture, but this is a fun way for us embrace Distance Learning.
Please see more information and click on the PDF link below from our Yearbook Staff:
• Go to https://high5.id/p/qpq4m to take your picture. Make sure you have your student's ID number handy.
• You or your student will take their selfie portrait on your phone or computer webcam and upload.
• Photos are sent directly to our system and are used to create yearbook portraits and school IDs. This entire three-step process only takes a few seconds. If your photo is rejected for quality issues, you may be asked to retake and submit.
Don’t forget to order this year’s historic yearbook before we run out! Your student will not want to miss out on all of the stories that are making this year so unique.
Buy today [online through the Stanwood Middle School website] for only $25.

Checking In & Resources & Class Meetings
Hello Everyone! As we round the corner to the end of 1st semester, I want to pause and say Bravo and Thank You to all of our families and students who have worked hard to do distance learning in a pandemic. I know it is not always easy. Extra shoutouts and virtual smiles to our new 6th grade families, our new students, and to families who may have already had a lot on their plate — this time can be even tougher, I know.
I have enjoyed talking to so many of you about the unique challenges and learning curves of distance learning, and also about mental health and healthy coping strategies to endure this challenging time. Here we are in the middle of winter in a pandemic — I want to always encourage and remind all of us to take extra time to connect with and nurture the kids in our lives. We often notice an increase in mental health challenges in winter, and unfortunately the nature of the pandemic --with fewer social connections and healthy outlets-- can make it really tough for so many young people.
It can, of course, be hard sometimes in the early teen and teenage years to stay connected to your child. As we know, connection is exactly what teens continue to need at home and school, just like when they were younger. This article has some helpful reminders and tips for staying connected to your teen.
I also want to be sure everyone has a few key resources on hand for your student and family:
1. Teen Link is available for teenagers to talk to someone by phone and text from 6pm-10pm every night: 1-866-TEENLINK
2. Children’s Hospital has a Mental Health Referral Service, available to any family in WA State to find a local therapist for your child: 1-833-303-5437
3. The Crisis Line is available 24/7: 1-866-427-4747 or text 741741
Please let us know if you are seeing some changes in your child, or have any concerns — We are here to help either directly or to share resources and next steps.

Gender Lesson
This week in the class meetings, I presented a short lesson on gender, as one aspect of diversity and kindness. As we know, LGBTQ+ students across the country face higher rates of discrimination and mental health challenges. We want to be sure that all SMS students feel safe and supported at school. We talked about what the acronym LGBTQ+ means, preferred pronouns, and how to talk to a trusted adult if a student has questions or needs some support.
We are here for you & We will get through this together.

Because we are not able to be in person this year Mr. Wall, our wonderful multimedia, yearbook and keyboarding teacher, has put together a slideshow to allow families to see faces, to see what peoples roles are in the building, and to see contact information for everyone!
