JCMS Team 2 Newsletter
Week of August 12, 2019
What's going on in class?
Math
I would like to welcome you and your students to Team 2 6th grade math. Our first week went well and I am looking forward to beginning our Math content work. We will be starting our year learning about ratios and drawing diagrams to demonstrate how to help solve these problems. Next week will be the first session of i-Ready testing. I look forward to a great year!
Language Arts
Welcome to JCMS Team 2! I am so excited to have you in Language Arts this year! This week we have been learning the procedures and expectations for the building, team, and classroom. We have also spent some time getting to know each other through “Get to Know You BINGO”, a PowerPoint presentation, “Would You Rather?”, and an interest inventory sheet. On Friday we started our ORF and MAZE testing which we will finish up next week. These tests will help us determine each students’ reading abilities in both oral reading and comprehension.
Next week we will finish the ORF and MAZE testing, set up their interactive notebooks (INB), begin our “Paragraph of the Week”, and start discussing text marking. On Monday students will also begin their nightly homework assignment. This homework will be reading a book of their choice each night for 20 minutes and then answering a few questions.
Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing all the students refreshed and ready to learn on Monday!
Science
The first week in science has flown by! Students are learning guidelines for success at JCMS, as well as in individual classes. We have set up their interactive science notebooks and will start using them daily next week. In addition to this, students are took a Science Diagnostic Test on Friday. This is used as a reference to what they already know and what we will need to spend more time on. I asked students to take home a Team 2 Science Expectations guide on Thursday night. If possible, please initial it and return it. I also encourage each of you and/or your student to sign up for our Class Remind Account. I will send out updates with future dates of tests/as well as homework assignments.
I am so excited to get to know and learn with your student this school year. Please contact me if you have any concerns.
Social Studies
Welcome to 6th Grade team 2! This week we spent a lot of time getting to know each other. We focused on expectations for our school, expectations for team 2, and my personal expectations in my social studies class. On Wednesday the 6th grade attended an assembly about school expectations. On Friday our students received their laptops from the library. Next week we will begin to ease into Ancient World History. We will begin with discussing what primary and secondary sources are. We will also focus on understanding geography before diving into studying early man and the Neolithic era. I am excited for the year, I know it will be a good one!
