The Dog Days of Summer

Hello Phoenix families!

As we enter the last week August, I was wondering what the "dog days of summer" meant. As a dog lover, and a lover of the warm "beachy" weather, it bothered me that the phrase had a negative connotation. Well...I was wrong, the connotation is not panting, uncomfortable dogs at all! According to ABC 7, the phrase " the dog days of summer" comes from the ancient Greek and Romans. They kept track of the seasons by looking at the sky the the constellation "Sirius" was known as the "dog star" because it was shaped like a dog. When Sirius appeared in the sky just before the sun, it was near the end of July, just before the hottest days of the year. This period was referred to as "dies caniculares" or "days of the dog star" by the Romans. Eventually, it was translated just as "dog days."
