St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 3 - Term 4 (Thursday 29 October)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
God of Faith, Hope and Love
God of faith, deepen our faith
so we may bear witness to Christ in the world;
God of hope, strengthen our hope
so we may be signposts
to your transforming presence;
God of love, kindle our love
so that in a fragile and divided world,
we may be signs of faith, hope and love
inspired by the Holy Spirit,
which we share with your Son, Jesus Christ
Amen.
Our prayers and best wishes are extended to the many Year 6 students as well as Parish children who are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend.
Congratulations Alex!
We are very proud of our Year 6 student, Alex S who has been awarded a Headmaster's General Excellence Scholarship to Wesley College.

Grandparents’ Day at St Jerome’s
On Friday 13th November we will again be holding Grandparents’ Day. We invite the grandparents of our students to come to St Jerome’s and spend time in class with their grandchildren and then join them for recess either on the oval or around the school. There will be some seating available for adults around the school and in the Under Cover area, but you may wish to bring along a rug to picnic on the oval.
A light morning tea will be provided for our grandparents. We ask that children bring along their own recess and they may like to bring something special to share with their grandparents.
The day will begin with everyone in classrooms from 9:00-10:30am followed by an extended recess from 10:30 -11:15am.
We look forward to welcoming our grandparents on this special morning to show our appreciation for the important role they play in the lives of our students.

The Power of Positive Thinking
One of the most powerful lessons that we can teach our children is that they have the power to control their thoughts. Cognitive science has confirmed that positive thinking is a learned trait and that the more children practice this skill the stronger their neural connections become.
Yes, sometimes life sends us challenging situations, but we have the ability to make a choice about how we are going to feel about them. We can choose to see the good or positive aspects of a situation and although it does not always feel like it, there is usually an important life lesson that can be found in almost any circumstance. This understanding enables children to handle life’s ups and downs with more resiliency, which in turn leads to happier, healthier children.
Current brain research has proven that stress inhibits learning. Children learn through emotions, feelings, and experiences. Positive, playful emotions, promote learning, where as negative emotions, like stress and anxiety, hinder it. An optimistic brain works better!

Ponder
· What are some ways you can support each other as a family to try to find the positive aspects of different challenges as they present themselves? Is there a little sign or reminder you can give each other to change your way of thinking when you need it most?
· Are there any situations where you can’t seem to see a silver lining? Try to dig a bit deeper and think about what lesson you might be able to learn?
· Talk about a time in your life that initially felt half-empty, but turned out to have positive consequences.

Positive Behaviours
This year, a team of staff have been reviewing how the school deals with behaviour as part of our cyclical policy review. Our draft policy will be presented to parents at the next P & F Meeting on Tuesday, 10th November. We welcome any feedback from our families. The draft Positive Behaviours Policy is based on restorative practices – equipping children with the skills to accept responsibility for their education and behaviour. Underpinning this is our Catholic Social Teaching of Subsidiarity – this is authentic power. Ensuring that our children are given the skills to manage their big emotions and feelings. This is called self-regulation. A method called Zones of Regulation assists children is recognising that all emotions are part of being human. It is how we deal with them that matters.
