General News! Week of October 17th- 21st
Happy Monday! It's Report Card Day! Students will be bringing home their 1st Quarter report cards today. Please sign the outer envelope, and return those to school as soon as possible. Hopefully the reports will be a positive reflection of your child's current progress, but if not, there is plenty of time to help them get back on the right track. Many of the lower grades we are seeing are not based on capabilities, bit simply a reflection of assignments that have not been completed, or turned in...This first quarter we offered many opportunities for missing or incomplete work to be turned in; many students took advantage of those opportunities, but many did not.As the year progresses the expectation for work to be completed and turned in on time, without exceptions. Let's work together to help keep them all on track!

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
Our progress did not go quite as planned last week...we did get though the screen play of The Outsiders. It is always interesting to see the similarities and differences between the novel and the movie versions of a literary piece.
This week we will attempt to begin our journey into "The Thrill Of Horror". We will examine why the horror genre both terrifies and fascinates us. We will explore the life and death of Edgar Allan Poe, as well as read some of his most well know literary works such as: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and Annabelle Lee, just to name a few.
The literary terms that we have been working on will be quizzed on the end of this week. Students should be visiting StudyStack to help keep these terms fresh in their minds, as we are utilizing these terms on a regular basis as we explore our various pieces of literature.
A quick reminder that the first Independent (Choice) Reading book for 2nd quarter will be due by Friday October 29th. I am hopeful that many more students will begin to see the value in daily reading practice. We all took a visit to the library the other day, so everyone should have something that they are currently reading. Students have been asked to bring their books to school with them daily. We will focus part of our school time to this valuable practice, but this will not exclude the need for them to be reading at home.
If your child has books at home that need to be returned so they can check out something new, or have fines to pay ,please try to take care of these as soon as possible. If there is a problem I can help you with please let me know, I'd be glad to help!
TweenTribune is back this week! This assignment is due each Friday afternoon by 3pm. If you child does not have access to the internet at home, please ask them to take advantage of coming down to my room before school, or ask me to print out some articles for them. This is great practice, and an easy way to boost their reading grades!
Have a great week!
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week we a wrapping up the American Revolution and jumping off into Georgia as a state, the Articles of Confederation, the Constitutional Convention of 1787, and Westward Expansion. We will study in detail Georgia’s two attempts to form a stable government. The first, in 1777 (much like the Articles of Confederation) and the second, Georgia Constitutional Convention of 1787.
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Monday-Thursday we will be continuing our practice of operations with exponents. Friday we will begin scientific notation. Students will have homework most nights this week. I have included some links for the students to use if they are confused. One of the most often confused exponent law is the law of zero. We will learn that this week so look for your student to come home and explain the law to you. I believe the best way for students to learn is for them to teach it to someone else. To give you a heads up, anything raised to the zero power is 1, so 2^0 = 1 and even x^0 = 1. This is in the plans for Wednesday, so start looking for it then.
Have a wonderful week!
