Principal's message
It is going to be a wild end of the school year over here at Lum. From our Spring Carnival to the Talent Show, Open House and our Volunteer Breakfast and Spring Music performances, we have so much of our amazing school to showcase. I expect to be here late on many nights, swelling with pride over the amazing work of our PTA, teachers and staff, and most importantly, our students. The bitter pill for us in the Lum community (and really over much of Alameda) is that this is all being done under the threat of the shuttering of our school. For my teachers and staff to keep a brave face up, to plan exciting lessons and deliver engaging content, all the while wondering where they will end up teaching next year, and with whom, is terribly unfortunate. Know that we are coming together here at Lum to support each other, and help when the anxiety and sadness come so that we can be strong for your children. Thank you for our flowers, for our potluck, for the notes of encouragement, support and love. There may be time for sadness down the road, but for now, we are keeping a brave face, fighting the good fight, and smiling through our tears. #LumLoves

PTA MEETING: The final PTA Meeting of the year will be held immediately following the Lum Open House on Wednesday, May 17. This will be a very brief meeting at which we will present and vote on the 2017-18 budget. Please stop by the MPR after visiting your students’ classrooms – we just need 10 minutes of your time!
SPRING FLING CARNIVAL & RAFFLE: What a fantastic day at Lum! Thank you to all the families and staff and volunteers who helped make our 3rd annual Spring Fling a huge success. Not only did we raise money for Lum, we showed that fantastic Lum spirit. Fun games, tasty food, soaked staff, terrific entertainment – it was a blast!!
FIRE UP YOUR FEET: Only 1 more week ‘til the Spring Challenge ends! Fire Up Your Feet is a great national program that encourages families to maintain healthy lifestyles with physical activity. From April 15-May 15, all Lum students, staff, and their families (parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles) can register ANY and ALL physical activity at www.fireupyourfeet.org, and Lum will be in the running for a $5,000 award!! In the past year, Lum was awarded nearly $3000 through this program! Think of all the possibilities–walking/biking to and from school, exercise classes, the gym, afterschool activities for the kids, sports teams, and so much more! Email Kelly@LumPTA.com for more info. Volunteers will be tracking our students’ activity during school hours (recess, PE, etc.) but all activity outside of school can be tracked by YOU!
TEACHER & STAFF APPRECIATION MONTH: May is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Month at Lum! It is a great opportunity to show the teachers and staff our appreciation for all their hard work and devotion to our children. 2016-2017 Volunteer Requirements
We appreciate all our volunteers and what they do for Lum School. We thank you for your cooperation with AUSD Volunteer policies, as outlined below:
1. Volunteers must complete a volunteer agreement form each year and provide a copy of their driver’s license/passport to the office. (Volunteer agreement forms in office.)
2. Principal Woodward will perform a search of the Department of Justice website (Megan’s Law).
3. If you will be regularly volunteering in a classroom, or elsewhere at the school, the school will need a clear TB test result.
4. If you will be driving on any field trips, working unsupervised with students, or spending the night on overnight field trips, you must be fingerprinted. In addition, when driving, the required driver’s insurance coverage must be provided. (Insurance coverage forms in office.)
5. Fingerprinting instructions are outlined below, and fingerprints must be cleared at least a week prior to the field trip. This process may take up to a month, so start well in advance of the field trip:
a. Pick up a Livescan form and suggested Livescan locations list from the Lum office.
b. Arrange for fingerprinting with the Alameda Police Dept. or another facility on the locations list. Pay the required fees to the fingerprint facility.
c. Have fingerprints taken and return the Live Scan form to AUSD Human Resources.
d. Human Resources will inform the office when the prints have cleared.
e. Once fingerprints are taken, they are good for life!
We truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication shown from our Lum volunteers.
